The Tangente River is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Wawagosic River. This river is located in the large area called Eeyou Istchee Baie-James (municipality), which is part of the Nord-du-Québec region. The river flows through a place known as Bacon township.
The main activity around the Tangente River is forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. People also enjoy outdoor activities and tourism here. There are some smaller forest roads that help people get around the area.
During winter, the river usually freezes over. It's typically frozen from late November until the end of April. It's generally safe to walk or travel on the ice from early December to mid-April.

Where the Tangente River Flows
The Tangente River is surrounded by other rivers and lakes. These are called its "hydrographic slopes" or nearby water systems.
- To the north, you'll find the Plamondon River, Kadabakato River, Mistaouac River, Mistaouac Lake, and Angle River.
- To the east, there's Wawagosic Lake, Nonan Creek, and the Harricana River.
- To the south, you'll see Promenade Creek, Saucer Creek, and the Wawagosic River.
- To the west, there's the Wawagosic River again, and the Perdrix River (Eeyou Istchee Baie-James).
Starting Point of the River
The Tangente River begins at the end of Wawagosic Lake. This lake is about 4.4 kilometres (2.7 mi) long and sits at an elevation of 278 metres (912 ft) above sea level. The river starts on the west side of the lake.
The starting point is:
- About 31.0 kilometres (19.3 mi) southwest of the village of Joutel.
- About 5.4 kilometres (3.4 mi) northeast of where the Tangente River joins the Wawagosic River.
- About 60.5 kilometres (37.6 mi) east of the border between Ontario and Quebec.
- About 76.2 kilometres (47.3 mi) southeast of where the Wawagosic River joins the Turgeon River (Eeyou Istchee Baie-James).
The River's Journey
From Wawagosic Lake, the Tangente River flows for about 6.6 kilometres (4.1 mi). It flows entirely through a forest area.
Its path includes two main parts:
- It flows southwest for 3.0 kilometres (1.9 mi) until it meets a small creek coming from the northwest.
- Then, it continues flowing southwest for another 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) until it reaches its mouth.
Where the River Ends
The Tangente River ends by flowing into a bend of the Wawagosic River. This meeting point is also in a forest area.
This ending point is located:
- About 78.0 kilometres (48.5 mi) southeast of where the Wawagosic River joins the Turgeon River (Eeyou Istchee Baie-James).
- About 56.5 kilometres (35.1 mi) east of the Ontario - Quebec border.
- About 80.1 kilometres (49.8 mi) southeast of where the Turgeon River (Eeyou Istchee Baie-James) joins the Harricana River.
- About 36.2 kilometres (22.5 mi) southwest of the village center of Joutel, Quebec.
Naming the Tangente River
The name "Tangente River" was officially given on December 5, 1968. This happened when the Commission de toponymie du Québec (Quebec's Place Names Commission) was first created.
