Tanner Butte is a mountain peak located in Hood River County, Oregon. It sits right on the edge of the amazing Columbia River Gorge. Standing at about 4,478 feet (1,365 meters) tall, it's the highest point in the western part of the Gorge.

Tanner Butte is the highest spot on Tanner Ridge. This ridge runs north to south. It separates the areas drained by Tanner Creek and Eagle Creek. The peak is in a wild, remote part of the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness. This wilderness area is inside the Mount Hood National Forest. It also touches the edge of the Bull Run Watershed.

Exploring Tanner Butte

Tanner Butte is a special place because you can only reach it by hiking trails. There are no roads that go directly to the area. The closest trailhead is more than nine miles away. This makes it a truly wild and peaceful spot.

How to Reach the Peak

There are a few trails that lead to Tanner Butte:

  • The Tanner Butte Trail #401 climbs up Tanner Butte. It follows Tanner Ridge for about eight miles. This trail starts from a closed road called Tanner Creek Road.
  • The Eagle-Tanner Trail #433 goes up the other side of the butte. It is about five miles long. This trail connects from the Eagle Creek Trail #440.
  • The Tanner Cutoff Trail #448 and the Eagle Creek Trail connect Tanner Butte. They link it to the larger network of trails in the Gorge.

Nature's Challenges

In 2017, the Tanner Butte area was greatly affected by the Eagle Creek Fire. Almost the entire north side of the peak burned very badly. This fire changed the landscape a lot.

Because of the fire, there's a higher risk of things like landslides. These are when rocks and dirt slide down hills. There's also a risk of debris flows, which are like mudslides. Because of these dangers, the area was closed for safety. As of January 2019, it remained closed to visitors.
