History of Tannersville

Early Settlement and Trails

The area known as Tannersville was first settled by John Larner and his family. They originally called the place Pocono Point. The village is where the local government buildings are located today.

Long ago, Native American trails ran through this area. These trails were later made wider for stagecoaches. Over time, they became the highways we use today. Two important trails were the Lackawanna Trail and Sullivan's Trail. The Lackawanna Trail is now Route 611. It still goes right through Tannersville.

Learned's Tavern and Sullivan's Expedition

A historic building called Learned's Tavern was built along the Lackawanna Trail. It was also known as The 1740 Alpine Inn. Sadly, it burned down in the year 2000. In 1779, this tavern was the last building before the wild frontier.

On June 18, 1779, a famous general named John Sullivan and his soldiers camped at the tavern. They were on an important journey called the Sullivan Expedition. After their stay, they cut a new road through the wilderness. This road eventually became what we now call Sullivan's Trail.
