Rose Marie "Tantoo" Cardinal is a famous Canadian actress. She was born on July 20, 1950. Tantoo is from the Cree and Métis communities. In 2009, she became a member of the Order of Canada. This is a high honor given for her work in helping Indigenous performing arts grow in Canada. She is known for her roles in movies and on stage. She also helped start the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company.

Growing Up: Tantoo's Early Life

Rose Marie "Tantoo" Cardinal was the youngest of three children. Her mother, Julia Cardinal, was of Cree and Métis background.

Tantoo grew up in a small place called Anzac, Alberta. There was no electricity, which made her use her imagination a lot while playing outside. Her grandmother gave her the nickname "Tantoo." This name came from the bug spray they used when picking blueberries together. Her grandmother taught her the Cree language. She also shared traditional ways of their culture. Tantoo learned about the challenges of growing up Métis in Canada. Tantoo has said that she first learned to act by watching her grandmother.

Tantoo Cardinal has acted in many well-known movies and TV shows. Some of her famous roles include parts in Dances with Wolves, Black Robe, Legends of the Fall, and Smoke Signals. She also appeared in the TV series North of 60.

In 2009, she received the Order of Canada. This award recognized her important work in Canadian Indigenous performing arts. She was honored for being a great actress on screen and stage. She also helped create the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company.

Tantoo Cardinal is also an activist. In 2011, she joined others to protest a big oil pipeline project. She wanted to protect the environment.

In 2012, she played a main role in a play called King Lear. This was a famous play by William Shakespeare. Her role was Regan, and the whole cast was Indigenous. The play was performed at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

She also played Marilyn Yarlott in the Netflix show Longmire. Her character was a Crow hunter and medicine woman. She lived alone in the wild lands of the Crow reservation.

In 2017, Tantoo Cardinal won the Earle Grey Award. This award is for actors who have achieved a lot in their career. She has also won a Gemini Award and an Indspire Award. She was also added to Canada's Walk of Fame.

In the 2018 movie The Grizzlies, she played a high school principal. Her character was unsure if a new teacher could help with social problems in the community of Kugluktuk, Nunavut.

In November 2021, Tantoo Cardinal received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award. This award celebrates great artists in Canada.

Tantoo's Family Life

Tantoo Cardinal met her first husband, Fred Martin, when she was in high school. They were married from 1968 to 1978. They had a son named Cheyenne.

Later, she had another son, Clifford, with Beaver Richards.

From 1988 to 2000, Tantoo was married to actor John Lawlor. They had a daughter named Riel.
