Tanum Municipality is a local area, or municipality, located in southwestern Sweden. It is part of Västra Götaland County. The main town and administrative center of Tanum is Tanumshede, which has about 1,600 residents.
The municipality you see today was created in 1971. Before that, the area was made up of several smaller local units.
What's in a Name?
The name "Tanum" comes from an old farm called Tanum. The first church in the area was built there a long time ago. The name "Tanum" comes from the Old Norse words tún, meaning 'country courtyard', and heimr, meaning 'homestead' or 'farm'.

People of Tanum
In 2022, Tanum Municipality had about 12,959 residents. Out of these, around 10,274 were Swedish citizens old enough to vote. When people voted in the 2022 Swedish general election, about 41.4% supported the left-leaning political groups. About 57.5% supported the right-leaning political groups.
Amazing Sights
One of the most famous places in Tanum is the area with the rock carvings. These ancient carvings are so important that UNESCO has named them a World Heritage Site. This special area is located near the town of Tanumshede and covers about 18 square kilometers.
Most of these rock carvings show people and ships. You can also see animals like oxen and horses carved into the rocks. The municipality is very proud of these carvings. In fact, one of the rock carvings is even featured on Tanum Municipality's coat of arms.
Another important historical site is the Greby grave field. This is the largest grave field in the Bohuslän region and is located close to the town of Grebbestad.
Tanum Municipality is also known for being one of the first places to use special toilets that separate urine. This helps to save phosphorus, which is an important resource for farming around the world.
