Taos is a small city located in Cole County, Missouri, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,150 people lived there. Taos is part of the larger Jefferson City Metropolitan Area.

History of Taos

Taos was officially planned and settled in 1849. The city got its name from Taos, New Mexico, a town far away. Before the city was even laid out, a post office opened in Taos in 1848. It helped people send and receive mail until 1907.

A special building in the city, the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and Rectory, is very old and important. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. This means it's a place worth protecting because of its history.

Geography and Location

Taos is found in the eastern part of Cole County. It sits along Missouri Route M, a local road. To the west of Taos is the town of Wardsville, and to the east is Schubert.

The United States Census Bureau measures the land and water areas of cities. Taos covers a total area of about 2.27 square miles (5.88 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 2.23 square miles (5.78 square kilometers), is land. A small part, about 0.04 square miles (0.10 square kilometers), is water.

In 2010, the city of Taos had 878 people living there. These people lived in 331 different homes, and 249 of these were families. Most of the people living in Taos were White (98.7%). A small number were Native American or Asian. About 1% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
