History of Tarampa

How Tarampa Got Its Name

Tarampa got its name from a large farm area called a 'pastoral run'. This farm was named in 1847 by a farmer named Charles Cameron. The name 'Tarampa' comes from the Yuggera language. It means wild lime tree.

Early Land Use and School

In 1877, a big piece of land (about 2240 acres) was taken from the Tarampa farm. This land was then offered for people to buy and settle on.

Tarampa Provisional School first opened on April 1, 1880. It later became Tarampa State School on July 1, 1886.

Tarampa During World War II

During World War II, a military airfield was built near Tarampa. It was called Lowood. From March to May 1942, the United States Army Air Forces used this airfield. They had fighter planes called P-39 Airacobras there. The airfield is no longer there, but a small memorial marks its old spot.

Lowood Circuit Race Track

The old airfield site later became a race track called the Lowood Circuit. This track even hosted the 1960 Australian Grand Prix, a very important car race. The race track has since closed down. The land has been used for other things. You can still see parts of the old runway from above.
