Population Changes Over Time
The number of people living in Taramundi has changed a lot over the years. In 1877, there were over 3,700 residents. However, the population has slowly decreased since then. By 2010, only about 741 people lived there. This trend shows fewer people are choosing to live in this rural area.

Local Villages and Areas
Taramundi is made up of several smaller areas, often called parishes. These include:
- Bres
- Ouría
- Taramundi (the main town)
- Veigas
The Turía Valley: A Natural Gem
Taramundi is part of the beautiful Turia Valley, also known as “Valle del Turía.” This small valley is located on the western edge of the Cantabrian Mountains in northwest Spain. It's special because it's close to beaches and is split between two regions: Asturias and Galicia.
The valley covers about 90 square kilometers (35 square miles) and is home to around 3,910 people. It sits about 200 meters (656 feet) above sea level. The two main towns in the valley are A Pontenova in Galicia and Taramundi in Asturias.
Turía Valley Climate
The weather in the Turía Valley is nice all year round. Unlike southern Spain, this northern part has an Atlantic climate, meaning it's more changeable. In summer, the average temperature is usually around 26°C (79°F). In winter, the average is 8°C (46°F), with daytime temperatures around 12°C (54°F) and nighttime temperatures around 4°C (39°F).
Mountains of the Turía Valley
The Turía River gives the valley its name. The valley is surrounded by several hills and mountains. Some of these include:
- Sierra de Piedrafita (900 meters or 2,953 feet high)
- Sierra de Ouroso (1,033 meters or 3,389 feet high)
- Sierras de Dendin (900 meters or 2,953 feet high)
- Sierra de Teixedais (900 meters or 2,953 feet high)
- Sierra de Eirua (700 meters or 2,297 feet high)
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: Protecting Nature
Taramundi is also part of a special protected area called the Eo River, Oscos and Buron lands Biosphere Reserve. A Biosphere Reserve is a place recognized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). UNESCO's goal is to show how people and nature can live together in a balanced way.
There are many Biosphere Reserves around the world. They help protect important natural areas while also allowing people to live and work there sustainably. This particular reserve covers a large area of 158,883 hectares (about 613 square miles). About 215 square kilometers (83 square miles) of this belongs to the Turía Valley.
Local Economy and Tourism
The main ways people make a living in this region are through farming, fish farming, and tourism. While traditional farming has become less common, services like rural tourism have grown a lot. Farming is still very important to the local economy.
Many businesses here are small and run by families. Construction, shops, hotels, and especially rural tourism are big parts of the local economy. Rural tourism is growing fast, with about 170 places for visitors to stay in the Reserve.
The Turía River: A Lifeline
The Río Turía (Turia River) is a small but important river. It starts in Taramundi, Asturias, and flows into the Eo River near A Pontenova in Lugo.
The Turia River gives its name to the Turia Valley and flows through it. Many small streams and creeks from the surrounding mountains feed into the Turia River. It is also part of the Eo UNESCO biosphere reserve, which helps protect its natural environment.
Even though the river begins in Asturias, most of its important features and uses are found in Lugo, Galicia.
The Turia River is vital for local industries. Its waters are used for traditional crafts, like making knives (Navajeros crafts) and textiles. It also supports salmon farming in A Pontenova, Lugo.
