Taranto has played in Serie B (a high level of Italian football) 31 times. This is more than any other Italian club that has never played in Serie A (the top league). Taranto ranks 19th in the all-time Serie B history. However, they have not been in Serie B since 1993.

History of Taranto Football Club

How A.S. Taranto Started

The very first football team in Taranto was Mario Rapisardi, created in 1904. Another team, U.S. Pro Italia, also started in 1904. These two teams tried to join forces but it didn't work out.

In 1911, a new team called Audace Foot Ball Club was formed by students. This started a big rivalry between Audace and U.S. Pro Italia. This rivalry lasted until 1927. In 1927, the two teams finally merged to create A.S. Taranto.

Early Years and Challenges

The new team, A.S. Taranto, first reached Serie B in 1935. They only played there for one year. In 1947, they merged with another local team, U.S. Arsenale Taranto. The club then changed its name to U.S. Arsenaltaranto. This name stayed until 1955, when they went back to the old name, A.S. Taranto.

In 1965, a new football stadium was opened in Taranto. The team spent many years playing in Serie B and Serie C. Their best time was in 1977–1978. The team, led by their star player Erasmo Iacovone, was playing very well. They were even hoping to get promoted to a higher league.

A Sad Loss and New Beginnings

Sadly, on February 6, 1978, Erasmo Iacovone died in a car accident. After his death, Taranto's stadium was named after him to honor him.

Taranto left Serie B in 1980–1981. They returned to Serie B three years later. In 1985, the club faced financial problems. It was taken over and had to change its name to Taranto Football Club SpA. However, more money troubles led to the team being shut down in 1993.

New Teams and Promotions

A new team, Taranto Calcio 1906, was started in 1993. It began playing in Serie D. The team reached Serie C2/C in 1994–1995. But in 1998, it also had financial problems and was closed.

Another new team, again named U.S. Arsenaltaranto, was then allowed to play in Serie D. In 2000, it moved up to Serie C2/C. Its name changed to Taranto Calcio Srl. In 2004, this team also went bankrupt. A businessman named Vito Luigi Blasi took over the club. He changed its name to Taranto Sport Srl.

In 2005–2006, Taranto Sport finished second in their league. They won the play-offs against Rende and returned to Serie C1/B. However, on June 29, 2012, the club was removed from professional Italian football.

Taranto Football Club 1927 Today

On July 20, 2012, a brand new club was formed: Taranto Football Club 1927 S.p.A.. This team started playing in Serie D. In 2013, they finished 7th in their league. In 2014, they finished second but lost in the play-offs to Arezzo. The next season was similar, with Taranto finishing second and losing in the play-offs to Sestri Levante.

In 2015, the club changed its name to Società Sportiva Dilettantistica Taranto Football Club 1927. In 2016, they finished second again. They lost in the play-offs to Fondi. But they were still promoted to Lega Pro because of a special rule.

In the next season, Taranto finished 20th in Lega Pro/C. This meant they were sent back down to Serie D after just one season. In 2017–18, they finished 4th in Serie D/H. They lost the playoff final to Cavese.

A year later, the team finished 3rd in Serie D/H. Again, they lost in the playoff final, this time to Audace Cerignola. The team finished 6th in 2019–20 Serie D/H, so they didn't make the play-offs.

Finally, in 2020–21, Taranto finished first in Group H. This win meant they were promoted to Serie C!
