Tarbert is a small settlement, often called a hamlet, located on Tarbert Bay. This beautiful bay is found on the eastern coast of Jura, an island in Scotland. Tarbert is part of the Argyll and Bute council area.

You can find Tarbert along the A846 road. It's about 11 miles (18 km) from Craighouse, another village on Jura. Tarbert is made up of two main parts: an area near Rubha nan Crann and a farm that looks out over the bay.

What is Tarbert?

The name "Tarbert" comes from a Scottish Gaelic word. It means "the isthmus." An isthmus is a narrow strip of land. This strip connects two larger land areas and has water on both sides. This name tells us something important about the geography of the area.

Ancient Connections

In Tarbert, you can find the old remains of a chapel. This chapel was dedicated to Saint Columba. He was a very important Irish missionary. Saint Columba helped spread Christianity in Scotland during the 6th century. Finding his chapel here shows how old and significant this place is.
