Tarranalma is a beautiful old house in Clayfield, a suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built in 1890 and is considered a very important historical building. Because of its history, it was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on October 21, 1992. This means it is protected and its history is kept safe for everyone to learn about.
History of Tarranalma House
This large, two-storey brick house was built in 1890. It was made for James Milne, who was part of a company called Smellie & Co. We don't know who the architect was. However, the house looks quite similar to another famous house called Verney, which was designed by Richard Gailey.
In 1910, Mr. Milne offered Tarranalma as a possible new home for the Governor of Queensland. This would have replaced Old Government House. But his price was too high. Instead, a different house called Fernberg in Paddington became Queensland's Government House.
In 1919, James Milne sold Tarranalma to George Logan. Mr. Logan was a well-known pastoralist, which means he owned a lot of land for raising animals. Originally, the house stood on a huge property of about 12 acres (4.8 hectares). But between 1926 and 1929, Mr. Logan divided and sold off most of the land.
After George Logan's wife, Susan, passed away in 1963, the house was changed. It was turned into seven separate apartments. Then, in 1984, Tarranalma was sold to its current owners. They worked hard to restore it and turn it back into a single family home.
What Tarranalma Looks Like
Tarranalma is a big, two-storey house. It is built with brick that has been covered with a smooth, rendered finish. The roof is made of corrugated iron.
The house has wide verandahs (porches) that go all the way around both floors. These verandahs are about 8 feet (2.4 meters) wide. There are also four parts of the house that stick out. These parts have special curved windows called bow windows.
On the ground floor, the main part of the house is square. It holds the drawing room, breakfast room, dining room, and a billiards room. These rooms are arranged around a central hallway. This hallway leads to a large "service wing." This wing is where the kitchen is, along with two big pantries, two bedrooms, and a bathroom.
A large staircase connects the dining and billiards rooms to the upstairs. On the second floor, there are four large bedrooms. These bedrooms are laid out in a similar way to the main rooms downstairs. Above the service wing, there are five smaller bedrooms. These are connected to the service rooms by another staircase at the very end of the wing.
Why Tarranalma is Important
Tarranalma is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register because it meets certain important rules.
