Tarrant Hightopp, often called the Mad Hatter, is a fun character from the movies Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016). He is based on the famous Mad Hatter from Lewis Carroll's classic Alice books.
The actor Johnny Depp plays Tarrant Hightopp in these films. He is one of the main heroes in both movies. Many people really liked the character when they saw him on screen.

The Mad Hatter's Adventures
In Alice in Wonderland (2010)
In the first movie, Tarrant meets Alice Kingsleigh. He guides her towards the White Queen's castle. He tells Alice how scary life is under the Red Queen's rule. Tarrant also notices that Alice seems different from before.
To help Alice escape, Tarrant bravely lets the Red Queen's guards capture him. Later, the Cheshire Cat helps him get free. Tarrant then encourages everyone to stand up against the Red Queen. At the end of the movie, the Hatter hopes Alice will stay in Wonderland.
In Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016)
At the start of the second movie, Tarrant is very sad and unwell. This is because his family went missing after the Jabberwocky attacked. This attack happened shortly after his father, Zanik, seemed to dislike a hat Tarrant made for him. Zanik was a hat seller, just like Tarrant.
For most of the movie, Alice Kingsleigh travels through time. She uses a special object called the "Chronosphere." Her goal is to save the Hatter's family from danger, as he seems to be fading away. By the end of the film, it turns out the Hightopp family is alive! Tarrant is finally reunited with them.
The Hatter's Family History
The second movie also tells us more about the Hatter's past. We learn about his family and where he comes from.
- Rhys Ifans plays Zanik, who is the Hatter's father.
- Simone Kirby plays Tyva, the Hatter's mother.
- Other actors play his extended family members. These include Joe Hurst, Siobhan Redmond, Oliver Hawkes, Frederick Warder, Eve Hedderwick Turner, and Tom Godwin.
