About Tatiana Clouthier

Her Early Life and Education

Tatiana Clouthier is one of eleven children. Her parents are Leticia Carrillo and politician Manuel Clouthier. Her father was a presidential candidate in 1988 for the National Action Party. He passed away in 1989.

Tatiana is one of three children in her family who became involved in politics. She often says that she is more than just her father's daughter. She believes she makes her own path in life.

Even though her family was well-off, Tatiana went to public schools. She studied at the General Ángel Flores public school in Culiacán. She earned a bachelor's degree in English Language from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education. Later, she got a master's degree in public administration. She studied at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León.

She also took many extra courses. These included topics like education, human rights, and civics. She believes her experience in public education helps her connect with people from all backgrounds.

Tatiana grew up in Sinaloa but has lived most of her life in Nuevo León. She lives in San Pedro Garza García. She is married to José Martínez, and they have two children.

Her Political Journey

Tatiana Clouthier started her career as a teacher and translator. She helped start and run a translation business from 1986 to 1990. She taught English, Mexican history, and social studies at different schools. These included Monterrey Tech and the Centro Universitario México. She was also a principal at a preparatory school for children from low-income families.

Tatiana also helped create and work for several social service groups. From 2000 to 2003, she advised the National Institute of Women. In 2009, she co-founded Evolución Mexicana A.C. This group works to promote civic responsibility and democracy.

She worked for the San Pedro Garza García city government from 1989 to 1997. She held different jobs there. From 1997 to 2001, she worked for the Secretariat of Education in Nuevo León.

Tatiana first joined the National Action Party (PAN), like her father. She was a member from 1991 to 2005. With this party, she served as a federal deputy twice. However, she became unhappy with the party and left it. She was criticized for leaving her father's party. Today, she says the PAN became too much like the Institutional Revolutionary Party, which her father strongly opposed. In 2009, she ran for mayor of San Pedro with the Nueva Alianza.

Managing a Presidential Campaign

Tatiana Clouthier became nationally famous as the campaign manager for Andrés Manuel López Obrador in 2018. She helped explain and promote why electing him would be good for Mexico.

Her family was surprised by her choice to support López Obrador. However, she said that many of his ideas were similar to her father's. Even though she worked closely with López Obrador, she is not a member of his political party.

Tatiana's biggest success was managing the campaign's online presence. She was especially good at using social media, like Twitter. She managed a Twitter account called Abre Más Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes Wider). She found Twitter to be a quick way to reach people. She used it for political campaigns and to find new supporters. She liked that it was fast, short, and direct.

She led a team that created social media messages. They focused on sharing the campaign's ideas and defending against attacks. She was very good at sharing political messages using videos, images, GIFs, and memes. Her social media work often used popular culture and funny responses to other campaigns. For example, she shared an image of López Obrador with the powerful gauntlet from Infinity War. The image said "corruption disintegrating" below it.

Her success on social media brought her into the spotlight. She started appearing more in traditional news. She even rode the Metro in Mexico City to hand out flyers and newspapers to riders.

Not all her campaign work was easy. Some of her tweets were challenged by the media. For example, she tweeted about foreign investment in Mexico City. The numbers she shared were later found to be incorrect by the Secretariat of the Economy. Another time, a photo showed her wearing a Rolex watch. This caused a stir because the campaign was about being simple. She explained it was a gift from her husband.

Tatiana Clouthier was not well-known at the start of the campaign. But she became one of its most important figures. Her work helped bring many young people to the campaign. She became so popular that other candidates reminded voters that López Obrador was running for president, not her. Young Mexicans on Twitter even gave her the nickname "Tía Tatis" ("Aunt Tatis").

After the Campaign

After the campaign, Tatiana Clouthier received offers to join Andrés Manuel López Obrador's government. She chose to become a Proportional Representation Deputy for the Chamber of Deputies. She held this position from December 2018 to December 2020.

On December 7, 2020, President López Obrador appointed her as the Secretary of Economy. In 2021, she asked Rodney Frelinghuysen, a former member of the United States House of Representatives, to represent Mexico's economic interests in Washington.
