From December 2020 to October 2022, she was the head of the Secretariat of Economy of Mexico. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador chose her for this important role. Many people in Mexico learned about Tatiana Clouthier when she managed López Obrador's presidential campaign in 2018. She was especially active and well-known on social media during that time.

About Tatiana Clouthier

Her Early Life and Education

Tatiana Clouthier is one of eleven children. Her parents were Leticia Carrillo and Manuel Clouthier, who was a well-known politician. Her father ran for president in 1988. He passed away in 1989 when Tatiana was in her mid-20s. Three of his children, including Tatiana, became involved in politics. Tatiana has said that while she respects her family, she wants to be known for her own achievements. She believes she makes her own path in life.

Even though her family was well-off, Tatiana went to public schools. She attended the General Ángel Flores public school in Culiacán. She earned a bachelor's degree in English Language from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education. Later, she completed a master's degree in public administration. She also took many extra courses in education and human rights. She feels that her experience in public schools helps her connect with people from all backgrounds.

Tatiana grew up in Sinaloa but has lived most of her life in Nuevo León. She currently lives in San Pedro Garza García. She is married to José Martínez, and they have two children together.

Her Political Journey

Tatiana Clouthier started her career as a teacher and translator. She helped start and run a translation business from 1986 to 1990. She also taught English, Mexican history, and social studies at various schools. She was even the principal of a high school for students from less wealthy families.

Tatiana also helped create and work with several social service groups. From 2000 to 2003, she advised the National Institute of Women. In 2009, she co-founded Evolución Mexicana A.C., a group that encourages people to be active citizens and support democracy.

Between 1989 and 1997, she held different jobs in the local government of San Pedro Garza García. These included roles in human resources and tourism. From 1997 to 2001, she worked for the Secretariat of Education in Nuevo León.

Tatiana first joined the National Action Party (PAN), like her father. She was a member from 1991 to 2005. During this time, she served as a federal deputy twice. However, she became unhappy with the party and left it. She has said that the party became too much like the Institutional Revolutionary Party, which her father had strongly opposed. In 2009, she ran for mayor of San Pedro with the Nueva Alianza.

Leading a Presidential Campaign

Tatiana Clouthier became widely known as the campaign manager for Andrés Manuel López Obrador's presidential campaign in 2018. She worked to explain and promote why electing López Obrador would be good for Mexico.

Her decision to support López Obrador surprised her family. However, she noted that many of his ideas were similar to her father's. Even though she worked closely with López Obrador, she is not a member of his political party. She has mentioned having some disagreements with him but keeps those private.

Tatiana's biggest success was managing the campaign's online presence, especially on social media. She was very active on Twitter through an account called Abre Más Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes Wider). She had discovered Twitter while working with civic groups, finding it a fast way to reach people. She used it for political campaigns, especially for finding new supporters. She liked that Twitter was quick, short, and direct. She led a team that created social media messages. Their goal was to share the campaign's ideas and respond to attacks from other candidates. She was very good at sharing political messages using videos, images, GIFs, and memes. Her social media work often used popular culture and funny responses to other campaigns. For example, she shared an image of López Obrador with the powerful gauntlet from Avengers: Infinity War, showing "corruption disintegrating."

Her success on social media brought her into the public eye. She started appearing more in traditional news and public events. She even rode the Metro in Mexico City to hand out flyers and newspapers to riders.

However, not all her work was without challenges. Some media and opposing candidates questioned tweets she made about foreign investment in Mexico City. There were also discussions when a photo showed her wearing a Rolex watch. This image seemed to go against the campaign's simple image. She explained it was a gift from her husband. She also caused some discussion when she said that the term "feminist" was "out of fashion" for her. She explained that for her, it was more about ensuring women had access to services for their families, like childcare.

Tatiana Clouthier was not very well known at the start of López Obrador's campaign. But she became one of its most important figures and a popular icon. Her work helped bring many young people to the campaign. She became so popular that other candidates had to remind voters that López Obrador was running for president, not her. Because of her connection with young Mexicans, she was nicknamed "Tía Tatis" ("Aunt Tatis") on Twitter.

After the Campaign

After the campaign, Tatiana Clouthier received offers to join Andrés Manuel López Obrador's government. However, she chose to become a Proportional Representation Deputy for the Chamber of Deputies. She held this position from December 2018 to December 2020. On December 7, 2020, López Obrador appointed her as the Secretary of Economy. In 2021, she asked Rodney Frelinghuysen, a former member of the United States House of Representatives, to represent the Secretary of Economy's interests in Washington.
