The Tavern Club was founded in 1884 by a group of friends. These founders included Royal Whitman, Timothee Adamowski, B. C. Porter, Edward Burnett, George Munzig, and Frederick Prince. Some of the very first members included Arthur Rotch.
How to Join the Club
To become a member, you need to be invited. For many years, only men were members. However, in more recent times, girls and women can also become members of the club. Over the years, many famous people have been members. These include writers like William Dean Howells and Henry James, and politicians like Henry Cabot Lodge.
The Club's Mascot
In February 1885, the club chose a bear as its special mascot. This bear symbol is still used by the group today!
