Tavi's Amazing Career Journey
Starting with Style Rookie (2008–2011)
Tavi Gevinson started her fashion blog, Style Rookie, in 2008. She was only 11 years old! On her blog, she shared photos of herself in unique outfits. She also wrote about the newest fashion trends. Soon, her blog became very popular, getting almost 30,000 readers every day. Her father wasn't very interested at first. But then Tavi asked him if she could be interviewed by The New York Times for an article about young bloggers.
Because her blog was so successful, Tavi was invited to big fashion events. These included New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week. She even traveled to Tokyo and Antwerp for fashion-related trips. A magazine called Pop paid for these trips. She also wrote articles for Harper's Bazaar and Barneys. Tavi helped style a photoshoot for BlackBook magazine. She was also a model for Rodarte's clothing line at Target stores. She even designed and sold her own T-shirt with another company. In 2010, she gave talks at a marketing conference in New York and at Idea City in Canada.
Some people were surprised by Tavi's early success in the fashion world. They wondered if she was getting help from her family. Some thought it was strange for a young person to be so involved in fashion. But Tavi said that many people at fashion week were there because of their name or money. She felt she was there because of her own hard work.
From Fashion to Rookie Magazine and Acting (2011–Present)
In early 2011, Tavi decided to write less about just fashion. She wanted to explore other creative things. She said, "Now I'm more interested in mixing fashion with other things I enjoy." Her own style also became simpler.
In the fall of 2011, when she was 15, Tavi started Rookie magazine. This online magazine focused on topics important to teenage girls. It was mostly written by teenage girls themselves. Famous people also wrote for it sometimes. In 2012, a special print version of the magazine, Rookie Yearbook One, was published. Tavi also gave a talk at TEDxTeen. She talked about how women are shown in popular culture. In November 2018, Tavi announced that Rookie magazine would close. It was no longer able to make enough money to keep going.
Tavi first acted in a short film in 2008. But she became more active in acting in 2012. That year, she used her voice for a character in an animated short film called Cadavar. She sang songs by Neil Young and Pet Shop Boys in the film. Also in 2012, Tavi filmed a role in the movie Enough Said. In 2013, she was interviewed in the documentary film The Punk Singer. She talked about the punk icon Kathleen Hanna. In 2014 and 2015, Tavi starred in a play called This Is Our Youth. She performed it in Chicago and on Broadway.
In 2015, she appeared as a guest star on the TV show Scream Queens. In 2016, she played Mary Warren in the play The Crucible on Broadway. Later that year, she played Anya in The Cherry Orchard, also on Broadway. She also sang a duet with Seth Bogart on his album in 2016.
Tavi Gevinson was called the "Queen of the Millennials" on a TV show. She also appeared on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore.
