Tazlina Lake is a large lake in the amazing state of Alaska, United States. It's about 21 miles (34 km) long. This beautiful lake is where the Tazlina River begins. It's located about 1 mile (1.6 km) north of where the Tazlina Glacier ended in 1952. The lake is also about 62 miles (100 km) north of a town called Valdez. Tazlina Lake is part of the Copper River area. It's actually a small piece left over from a much bigger, ancient lake called Lake Atna.

Discovering Tazlina Lake

The first European to reach Tazlina Lake was a Russian explorer named Shturman Serebrenikov. He arrived at the lake on May 30, 1848. In his notes, he called the lake "Plavezhnoye Ozero," which means "Plavezhni Lake." He also wrote that he saw two Native American families living near the lake at that time.

How Tazlina Lake Got Its Name

The name "Tazlina" comes from the river that flows out of the lake. This name was recorded in 1898 by F. C. Schrader, who worked for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Local people had been using this name for the river and the lake.
