Alexander (born June 1, 1999 – passed away in June 2022), known online as Technoblade, was a popular American YouTuber. He was famous for his exciting Minecraft videos and live shows. Technoblade also played a big part in the Dream SMP, a special Minecraft server.
He started his main YouTube channel in 2013. His videos mostly showed him playing Minecraft, especially on the minigame server called Hypixel. Technoblade became very popular in 2019. This was because of his amazing skills in player versus player (PvP) games. After this, he was invited to the Dream SMP Minecraft server in 2020. This helped him gain even more fans.
In August 2021, Technoblade shared that he was diagnosed with a serious illness. Sadly, after trying different treatments, he passed away in June 2022. His passing deeply affected the Minecraft and YouTube communities. Around that time, his YouTube channel had almost 11 million subscribers.

Building a YouTube Career
Technoblade started his YouTube journey on October 28, 2013. His channel quickly became a favorite for Minecraft fans. He often played on the Hypixel server, known for its fun minigames. One memorable video from 2017 showed him beating Minecraft on hardcore mode. He even used a racing wheel controller for this challenge!
Another popular series was "The Great Potato War." In these videos, he tried to grow the most potatoes in Hypixel's SkyBlock game. He competed against another player named im_a_squid_kid.
Technoblade's fame grew a lot in 2019. He won several "Minecraft Monday" tournaments. In these events, he beat many other famous content creators in combat. He also regularly joined the MC Championships (MCC) tournaments with other YouTubers. He won two of these exciting competitions. Many people, like Cale Michael from Dot Esports, thought Technoblade was one of the best Minecraft players, especially in player versus player (PvP) battles.
Epic Minecraft Battles and Rivalries
In 2020, Technoblade joined the Dream SMP. This was a special Minecraft server hosted by the YouTuber Dream. Many other popular Minecraft YouTubers played there too. Technoblade often created videos and live streams from this server.
He had a friendly rivalry with Dream. Both were seen as top Minecraft players. This rivalry even led to a series of player versus player duels. MrBeast hosted these duels, offering a $100,000 prize. Technoblade won this exciting challenge.
In September 2021, Technoblade hosted a charity livestream. He raised over $300,000 for the Sarcoma Foundation of America. This was a huge success, passing his $250,000 goal in just two hours.
By June 2022, his channel had 10.8 million subscribers. After his passing, it reached 15 million subscribers in August 2022. Then, in May 2025, his channel grew to an amazing 20 million subscribers.
A Special Message and Farewell
On August 27, 2021, Technoblade shared some personal news in a video. He told his fans he had been diagnosed with a serious illness. He had noticed pain in his right arm and swelling on his shoulder. Treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy, did not work as hoped. He also encouraged his viewers to wear face masks and get vaccinated. This was important because his immune system was weakened at the time.
In response to his news, Dream donated $21,409 to help with research for this illness. Technoblade also hosted a charity livestream in September 2021. In December 2021, he had a successful operation to help his arm.
On June 30, 2022, a video titled "so long nerds" was uploaded to his YouTube channel. In this video, Technoblade's father shared the sad news that Technoblade had passed away. His father read a message that Technoblade had written just hours before. The message said that money from his merchandise and videos would go to the Sarcoma Foundation of America. It would also help his siblings with their college education. The video ended with a heartfelt message from Technoblade's mother.
Technoblade had wanted to make this video himself. However, his health made it impossible. He had raised $500,000 for the Sarcoma Foundation of America during his YouTube career. The Foundation later confirmed he had been diagnosed with a type of cancer called sarcoma. They stated it was a stage 4 sarcoma that had spread to his lungs.
Remembering Technoblade: Tributes and Legacy
The video announcing Technoblade's passing quickly became the top trending video on YouTube. It also trended on Twitter. It stayed on YouTube's trending tab for several days. In its first 24 hours, it gained over 30 million views. By the end of August 2022, it had over 80 million views and 8 million likes. This made it the most viewed and liked video on his channel. YouTube recognized it as the top trending video of 2022.
Minecraft's Crowned Pig
On July 2, 2022, Mojang Studios, the creators of Minecraft, added a special tribute. They updated the launcher image for Minecraft: Java Edition. The new image showed a pig wearing a crown. This was a nod to Technoblade's in-game Minecraft skin and his channel's symbol. This tribute was later changed to promote a new update.
After fans suggested it, Mojang added a new message to the Minecraft title screen: "Technoblade never dies!" Mojang Studios shared that Technoblade "became synonymous with a source of good."
Technoblade is also remembered in the 2025 film A Minecraft Movie. In the movie, a pig wearing a crown appears. Steve, played by Jack Black, calls this pig "a legend."
Many YouTubers, including Dream and other members of the Dream SMP, shared their sadness and respect online. Simon Collins-Laflamme, co-founder of Hypixel, and businessman Elon Musk also shared their thoughts. YouTube and the official Minecraft Twitter account sent their condolences. The Sarcoma Foundation of America also created a special tribute on their website. Polygon called Technoblade "one of Minecraft's most celebrated personalities."
Don Pireso, a lead administrator at Hypixel, said Technoblade's family would not share more details. The Hypixel team created a special place on their Minecraft server. Fans could write one-page messages using an in-game book and quill. By August 2022, over 377,000 messages were collected. These were printed into 22 books and given to Technoblade's family. They also received fan art, an oil painting, and a Technoblade-themed cosplay headpiece.
On September 28, 2022, the Sarcoma Foundation of America honored Technoblade's family. They presented the SFA Courage Award. This award recognized Technoblade's "strength and perseverance" during his illness. In June 2024, it was estimated that about £1 million (or $1.26 million) had been raised for sarcoma awareness since his passing.
On October 18, 2022, Dream hosted a livestream with Technoblade's father. They shared stories about Technoblade. This livestream raised $47,087 for the Sarcoma Foundation of America in just 24 hours.
On October 28, 2022, YouTube uploaded an eight-minute video. It was titled "Technoblade Never Dies" and celebrated his channel's ninth anniversary. YouTube shared that since his passing, about 300 new videos with that phrase were uploaded daily. On the same day, MrBeast uploaded a video. Many believe this was the last video Technoblade took part in.
On June 23, 2023, Dream released his fourth song, "Until I End Up Dead." It was a tribute to Technoblade. He also released another video for the song, "The Duel," on August 26, 2023, also in his memory.
On June 30, 2024, two years after the announcement of his passing, a new video appeared on Technoblade's YouTube channel. It was edited by TommyInnit. TommyInnit explained that he found unused footage from a video he recorded with Technoblade. This video showed one hundred Minecraft YouTubers surviving disasters and fighting. TommyInnit put together what he thought would be a video up to Technoblade's standards. The video, a montage of Technoblade's perspective, received nearly three million views in just a few hours.
