Maerehia of Ra'iatea and Taha'a (1824 – 28 May 1893) was a princess from the Tamatoa royal family in Polynesia. This family was very powerful in the Society Islands. She became the wife of Ari'imate of Huahine. He founded the Teururai royal family. This family ruled the islands of Huahine and Maia'o in the 1800s.
Maerehia was first a Queen consort, meaning she was queen because she was married to the king. Later, she became a Queen regnant, which means she ruled the kingdom herself. She was known as Teha'apapa II when she became queen. She ruled Huahine from 1868 until her death in 1893.

Early Life and Family
Princess Maerehia was born in Raiatea in 1824. She was the only daughter of King Tamatoa of Ra'iatea. Her mother was Mahuti of Vaiari. Maerehia was the last member of the Tamatoa royal family.
She was also a cousin to Queen Pomare of Tahiti. This shows how connected the royal families of these islands were.
Becoming Queen Consort
In the early 1850s, there was a civil war in Huahine. This war removed the previous ruler, Teri'itaria II. After the war, important leaders chose Chief Ari'imate to be the new king. He officially became king on March 18, 1852.
When Ari'imate became king, Princess Maerehia became his Queen consort. This meant she was queen because she was married to the king.
Becoming Queen Regnant
About twenty years later, in 1868, another civil war happened. This time, her husband, King Ari'imate, was removed from power. Maerehia then took over as ruler. She became the Queen regnant and chose the name Teha'apapa II.
In 1890, Queen Teha'apapa II agreed to let France protect her kingdom. This was called a French protectorate. She passed away in 1893, surrounded by her family. Her granddaughter then became the next queen, taking the name Te-ha'apapa III.
