Teima Onorio (born in 1963) is a politician from Kiribati, a country made of islands in the Pacific Ocean. She has been a member of their main law-making group, called the House of Assembly, since 1998. She also served as the vice president of Kiribati for many years, from 2003 to 2016.
Early Life and Education
Teima Onorio is the daughter of Rota Onorio, who was also an important leader in Kiribati. Her father served as the president of the Council of State and acting President of Kiribati in the early 1980s.
Teima Onorio received a good education. She studied at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. Later, she continued her studies at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom, where she earned a master's degree in 1990.
Political Career and Roles
Teima Onorio began her political journey as a Member of Parliament. She represented the Arorae area in the House of Assembly from 1998 to 2002.
She has held several important government positions. Since 2012, she has been the Minister for Internal and Social Affairs. Before that, she was the Minister for Education, Youth and Sports Development from 2003 to 2007.
From 2007 to 2008, she led the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives. She then returned to her role as Minister for Education, Youth and Sports Development from 2008 to 2012.
Vice President of Kiribati
One of her most significant roles was serving as the Vice President of Kiribati. She held this position from 2003 to 2016.
As Vice President, she represented the Alliance of Small Island States at the United Nations. She often spoke about important global issues, especially climate change. This topic is very important for island nations like Kiribati.
President Anote Tong chose Teima Onorio to be Vice President for a third time in a row on January 19, 2012. This showed his trust in her leadership.
