Tel Aviv Port facts for kids
The Tel Aviv Port (called Namal Tel Aviv in Hebrew) was an important old port in Tel Aviv, Israel. It was used for ships and trade from 1938 until 1965. The port was built right next to where the Yarkon River meets the sea.
After it closed in 1965, the main port activities moved to the Ashdod Port further south. The Tel Aviv Port area then became mostly a place for warehouses. But in the 2000s, the area was completely changed! It became a popular spot for shopping, eating, and having fun. Many projects have been working to make it even better over the last ten years.
The Tel Aviv Port was part of a larger plan to develop the area around the Yarkon River. It was built near the Levant Fair grounds and looks like a peninsula (land surrounded by water on three sides) from above. The whole area around the port was developed in the 1930s.

Why Was the Tel Aviv Port Built?
The Tel Aviv Port was built because the city needed its own way to bring in goods and people. Before 1938, ships had to unload their cargo at the Jaffa Port, which was further south. But during the Arab Revolt in 1936, it became difficult and unsafe to use Jaffa Port. So, the Jewish community decided to build their own port in Tel Aviv. This new port helped the city grow and connect with the rest of the world.
What Happened After the Port Closed?
When the Tel Aviv Port closed in 1965, it was because a much bigger and more modern port, the Ashdod Port, was opened. Ashdod Port could handle larger ships and more cargo, which was better for Israel's growing economy.
For many years, the old Tel Aviv Port area was not used much. It became a place for storage and was quite run-down. But in the early 2000s, people realized that this area had a lot of potential. They started big projects to clean it up and make it a lively place again.
The Port Today: A Fun Place to Visit
Today, the Tel Aviv Port is one of the most popular places in the city for both locals and tourists. It's no longer a working port, but a vibrant area with many things to do:
- Shops and Restaurants: You can find many cool shops, cafes, and restaurants along the boardwalk.
- Events and Markets: There are often special events, concerts, and farmers' markets held here.
- Walks and Views: It's a great place to walk, ride bikes, and enjoy beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea.
- Family Fun: There are playgrounds and open spaces for families to enjoy.
The old port buildings and structures have been renovated, keeping some of their original look while making them modern and useful. It's a great example of how an old industrial area can be transformed into a fun and exciting urban space.
