Community History
The idea for Tellico Village started in the late 1960s. Back then, there was a big plan called Timberlake. This plan was to build a whole new city along the shores of the Tellico Reservoir. The city was meant to hold about 30,000 people and offer many jobs.
Tellico Village was created next to Tellico Lake. This lake was formed when the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) built the Tellico Dam. The dam was built across the Little Tennessee River in 1979. Building the dam was a long process. There was even a big legal fight about a small fish called the snail darter. This fish was protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1973.
As part of the dam project, the TVA bought extra land around the new lake. Some of this land was later sold to a company called Cooper Communities, Inc. This company then started Tellico Village in 1986.
Fun Things to Do
Tellico Village has many fun things for residents to enjoy. There are three golf courses and a yacht and country club.
The names of the golf courses, streets, and neighborhoods in Tellico Village come from American Indian words. Most of these words are from the Cherokee language. For example, one golf course is called Toqua, which means "fish." Another is Tanasi, which was the name of an important Cherokee town long ago. The name "Tennessee" actually comes from this word, "Tanasi."
