History of Temperance
The community of Temperance started in 1859. It was first known as Bedford Center.
In 1884, a post office was opened there. It was named Temperance. The name "Temperance" was suggested by the wife of one of the people who helped found the area. She was a member of a group called the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. This group promoted a lifestyle that did not include alcohol. The community then officially changed its name from Bedford Center to Temperance.
