Teoc's Early History
Teoc is likely the oldest settlement in Carroll County. It is located about eight miles northwest of North Carrollton. The community gets its name from Teoc Creek, which flows nearby.
A post office served the community of Teoc for many years. It was open from 1860 until 1907.
The McCain Family and Teoc
In 1851, a man named William Alexander McCain bought a large piece of land here. This land was known as Teoc Plantation. He owned many enslaved people who worked on the plantation.
William Alexander McCain died in 1863. He was fighting for the Confederacy during the American Civil War.
Today, a relative named Bill McCain still owns part of the original plantation land. He is a cousin of former senator John McCain. Bill McCain owns about 1,500 acres (607 hectares) of the original 2,000 acres (809 hectares).
Family Reunions and Connections
Since 2003, something special has been happening in Teoc. Black and white descendants of the community have been holding family reunions. The black McCains are descendants of two enslaved people from the plantation, Isom and Lettie, and also Henderson McCain.
After the Civil War ended, many black people stayed in Teoc. They continued to live and work on the land, often as tenants. They also adopted the McCain last name. This shows how closely connected the families remained.
Local Leaders in Civil Rights
The black McCain family members in Teoc were important leaders. In the 1880s, they helped organize schools for African-American children. Later, in the 1960s, they became local leaders in the Civil Rights Movement. This movement worked to gain equal rights for all people.
