Terence Blacker is an English writer, songwriter, and columnist. He was born on February 5, 1948, near Hadleigh, Suffolk, England. He is known for writing books for both children and adults.
About Terence Blacker
Terence Blacker grew up in a family of interesting people. His father was General Sir Cecil Blacker. His brother, Philip Blacker, is a sculptor and used to be a jockey (someone who rides horses in races).
He grew up on his family's farm in Suffolk, England. For his education, he went to Hawtreys school and Wellington College. Later, he studied English at Trinity College, Cambridge, and finished his studies in 1969.
Terence Blacker started his career in horse racing as an amateur jockey. After that, he worked in the publishing world for ten years. This was during the 1970s and 1980s. In publishing, he helped to get books ready for people to read.
Becoming a Writer
Blacker became a full-time writer in 1983. He has written many books for children and mystery novels for adults. His first book for kids, If I Could Work, came out in 1987.
His first novel for adults was called FIXX. This book was highly praised by critics. The Guardian newspaper called it a "tour de force," which means it was a very impressive work.
Terence Blacker is an active member of English PEN. This is a group that supports writers and free speech. He is also a member of EAW.
Family Life and Columns
In 1975, he married Caroline Soper. She is the youngest daughter of a famous minister named Donald Soper. They later divorced in 2001. They have two children together, Xan and Alice. Today, Blacker's partner is Angela Sykes.
He writes a regular section called "Endpaper" for The Author magazine. For many years, he wrote a column called "Harvey Porlock" in The Sunday Times newspaper. He also wrote a column about the book business for Publishing News.
He wrote columns twice a week for The Independent newspaper for almost 16 years. His last column for them was in December 2013.
In 2017, Terence Blacker was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. This is a special honor for writers in the United Kingdom.
