Teresa Gisbert Carbonell de Mesa (born November 30, 1926 – died February 19, 2018) was a very important Bolivian architect and art historian. She was an expert in the history of the Andean region, especially its art.

Life and Education

Teresa Gisbert Carbonell was born in La Paz, Bolivia, on November 30, 1926. Her family had moved to Bolivia from Spain. She studied architecture and urban planning at the Higher University of San Andrés in La Paz, finishing her degree in 1950.

After her studies, Teresa Gisbert traveled to Spain with her husband, José de Mesa. They got married in 1950. In Spain, they both continued their studies in art history. Teresa and José had four children: Carlos, Andrés, Isabel, and Teresa Guiomar.

Research and Teaching

From 1953 to 1962, while in Spain, Teresa Gisbert worked as a researcher. She worked at the Laboratory of Art at the University of Seville. She also worked at the Diego Velasquez Art Institute.

When she returned to Bolivia, she taught at the Higher University of San Andrés. From 1954 to 1970, she taught Bolivian culture and art history. Later, in 1972 and 1975, she taught American Art to architecture students.

Important Roles and Awards

Teresa Gisbert held many important positions in Bolivia. From 1970 to 1976, she was the director of the National Art Museum in La Paz. She also led the Bolivian Society for History from 1983 to 1984.

She directed the Bolivian Cultural Institute from 1985 to 1989. From 1986 to 1992, she was the president of the International Council on Monuments and Sites in Bolivia.

Teresa Gisbert received many awards and scholarships for her research. These awards helped her study art, architecture, and history. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship twice, in 1958 and 1966. This helped her research colonial art. She also had visiting scholarships at the Getty Research Institute in the 1990s. In 2006, she was chosen to be part of the American Philosophical Society.
