Terraced Falls: A Natural Wonder

Terraced Falls gets its name from how the water flows over different levels, like steps or terraces. The water of the Fall River cascades down these rocky ledges, creating a beautiful and unique look. It's a powerful and impressive sight, especially when the river is full.

Where is Terraced Falls?

Terraced Falls is found in the southwestern part of Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone is mostly in Wyoming, but parts of it reach into Montana and Idaho. The park is known for its amazing geysers, hot springs, and diverse wildlife.

The waterfall is located in Teton County, Wyoming, which is a beautiful area with lots of mountains and forests. It's a bit off the main tourist roads, which makes it a quieter place to explore.

How Terraced Falls Got Its Name

The name "Terraced Falls" was likely given by the Hague Geological Survey team. This group explored and mapped the area between 1885 and 1886. They were responsible for naming many natural features in Yellowstone.

Later, in the 1920s, there was an attempt to change the name to "Totem Falls." However, the United States Board on Geographic Names (USBGN) decided to keep the original name. The USBGN is a government group that makes sure names for places are consistent and official.

Visiting Terraced Falls

Terraced Falls is fairly easy to reach, which is great for visitors. You can get to it by taking a short trail. This trail starts from the Ashton-Flagg Ranch Road. This road runs along the southern border of Yellowstone National Park.

Because it's easy to access, it's a good spot for families and hikers who want to see a beautiful waterfall without a very long or difficult trek. Remember to always stay on marked trails and respect the park's rules when visiting.
