His journey to the U.S. team began when a teammate told the U.S. Under-20 coach about him. Terrence needed a U.S. passport, which meant getting paperwork signed by his biological father. He connected with relatives online to help with this process.
Once he had his passport, Boyd played for the U.S. Under-20 team. He also joined the U.S. Under-23 team. In February 2012, he made his debut for the full U.S. national team in a game against Italy.
He scored two goals for the U-23 team in a crucial game against El Salvador. Later, he earned his first start for the U.S. national team in a big 5–1 win against Scotland. He also played in a FIFA World Cup qualifier game, showing his commitment to the U.S. team.
In 2012, Boyd helped the U.S. team achieve a historic win against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. His clever pass led to the only goal of the game, which was the first time the U.S. had ever won at that stadium.
Terrence Boyd was on the list of players considered for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but he didn't make the final team. He has a tattoo of the American flag on his arm, showing how proud he is to represent the U.S.
