Terry Winter Owens was born in New York City. She started writing music when she was just ten years old! As a child, she took music lessons. She even won a scholarship to study with a teacher named Lisa Szylagi Grad. Later, she studied composition with Ralph Shapey and Mark Brunswick. She earned a music degree from The City College of New York. She continued her studies at New York University.
Owens was a talented musician. She played the violin, piano, and harpsichord. She performed with orchestras and small music groups. She was the musical director for the Staten Island Baroque Ensemble. She also played piano for the Richmond Opera Collection. She was the first violinist in the La Puma Opera Company Orchestra.
Besides performing, Owens worked as a music editor. She was one of the first to use special software for editing music. She also taught music and composition. She taught privately and at the Neighborhood Music School of New York. She also taught at the Music Institute of Staten Island.
Owens worked with filmmaker Douglas Morse on a movie called The Lost Children of Coney Island. This project received a grant from The American Composers Forum. She also wrote the music for the film The Clearing. This movie was chosen for the 1994 New York Expo. Terry Owens' music has been performed in many places around the world. These include New York City, Dubai, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Tokyo.
