Teshio Province facts for kids
Teshio Province (天塩国, Teshio-no kuni) was an important area in Japan a long time ago. It was located on the big northern island of Hokkaido. This province existed for a short time, from 1869 to 1882.
The borders of Teshio Province were similar to parts of what you see on maps today. They were much like the area known as Rumoi Subprefecture and the northern half of Kamikawa Subprefecture.

After 1869, the northern Japanese island became known as Hokkaido. New smaller areas were created across the island. Teshio Province was one of these new areas, formed in 1869.
How Provinces Became Prefectures
During the Meiji period (a time of big changes in Japan), the old provinces were changed into new areas called prefectures. Maps of Japan, including Teshio Province, were updated in the 1870s to show these changes.
In 1882, Teshio and the other ten provinces on Hokkaido were reorganized. They became part of three larger prefectures: Hakodate Prefecture, Sapporo Prefecture, and Nemuro Prefecture. This was the end of Teshio Province as a separate area.
