Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tetrapharmacum was a name used in ancient times for two very different things! One was an old Greek medicine, and the other was a fancy Roman meal. Let's explore both of them.

What Was Tetrapharmacum?

An Ancient Greek Remedy

The word tetrapharmacum comes from Greek words meaning "fourfold drug." It was a special mix used in ancient Greek medicine. This compound was made from four main ingredients:

  • Wax
  • Pine resin (a sticky substance from pine trees)
  • Pitch (a dark, sticky material, often from wood tar)
  • Animal fat, usually from pigs

This mixture was likely used as a kind of ointment or balm for healing.

The word tetrapharmakos was also used in a different way by a group of thinkers called the Epicureans. They lived in the 1st century. For them, "tetrapharmakos" was a way to talk about four important ideas or "remedies" for making the mind and soul feel better. It was like a medicine for your thoughts!

A Roman Feast Dish

Later, in ancient Rome, the name tetrapharmacum (or tetrafarmacum) was given to a very different kind of "fourfold" item. This time, it was a complicated and expensive dish served at big Roman meals!

This special Roman dish was a pastry filled with four main ingredients:

Imagine a giant pie filled with all these meats! It must have been quite a sight and very rich.

Who Invented This Dish?

We know about this Roman dish from an ancient book called the Augustan History. This book mentions the tetrafarmacum three times. All these mentions come from a biography of the Emperor Hadrian that is now lost.

According to these old writings, a Roman leader named Lucius Aelius invented this unique dish. He lived in the 2nd century CE. Emperor Hadrian, who was a very important ruler, really liked it! Later, another emperor named Alexander Severus also enjoyed this fancy meal.
