The Tharrkari Language
The Tharrkari people spoke their own language, which was one of four dialects of the Mantharta language family. A dialect is like a different version of a language. The other groups who spoke similar dialects were the Thiin, Warriyangka, and Djiwarli peoples.
Tharrkari Traditional Lands
The traditional lands of the Tharrkari people covered a large area. These lands were located in Western Australia. They included the coastal plains south of the Lyndon River. Their country stretched east towards Hill Springs and the start of the Minilya River.
To the south, their land reached areas like Middalya and Moogooree. It also included parts of the Kennedy Range. The Tharrkari shared their eastern borders with the Wariangga and the Malgaru peoples.
A Brief History
When European settlers arrived, life changed for the Tharrkari people. New settlements and activities along the coast put pressure on their traditional ways of life. Because of these changes, the Tharrkari people are believed to have moved eastwards. They settled closer to the Lyons River.
