The Adventures of Lolo the Penguin is an animated movie from 1986. It was first released as a three-part series. The original title means The Adventures of Small Penguin Lolo. This film was made together by Japan and the Soviet Union. It tells the story of an Adélie Penguin named Lolo.

The Story of Lolo the Penguin

The movie begins at the end of winter. The beautiful aurora australis lights up the southern sky. A group of penguins comes back home from the north. The female penguins go hunting for food. Meanwhile, the male penguins build nests from small pebbles.

When the females return, they lay their eggs. Then, the males stay to guard the eggs. Big seabirds often try to steal the eggs. One day, a penguin named Toto saves an egg from another family. Sadly, one of his own two eggs is stolen. When his mate, Lala, returns, Toto tells her the truth. They return the extra egg to its owners. Now, they have one egg of their own.

Lolo's Birth and Early Life

Soon, the eggs hatch! Toto and Lala welcome their baby penguin, Lolo. Lolo is very curious and loves to explore. Sometimes, his curiosity can bother other penguins. Lolo's best friend is a penguin named Pépé. Together, they go on many adventures. They learn about the animals living in their icy home. Lolo also becomes friends with Don, a tame husky puppy. Don is with his scientist owner on a trip to Antarctica.

Facing Dangers and Poachers

Later, Lolo and Pépé get separated from their home. They face many dangers. These include attacks from seabirds, leopard seals, and even killer whales. Eventually, they are captured by poachers. Poachers are people who illegally hunt or catch animals.

Luckily, Lolo and Pépé escape! They get help from a Macaroni Penguin named Mak. An old guard dog on the poachers' ship, named Jack, also helps them.

Lolo's Heroic Return

The young penguins finally return home. But the poachers have followed them! The poachers want to catch all the baby penguins. They plan to sell them to a zoo. Despite some challenges and dangers, Lolo bravely leads a successful rescue.

The story ends as winter arrives. Don and the scientist fly home in a helicopter. Mak goes off to find his own family. The penguins then travel north again. This time, Lolo leads them.

Different English Versions

The Adventures of Lolo the Penguin has two main English versions. The first one was made in Moscow. It kept the original music and names. This version also kept the movie as three separate parts.

In 2005, a company released this version on DVD in Australia. However, about 15 minutes of the movie were cut out. This was done to make it more suitable for a wider audience. Some scenes were removed or shortened.

The 'Scamper' Version

The second English version was called The Adventures of Scamper the Penguin. It came out in 1990. This version made many changes to make the film more kid-friendly for American audiences.

Here are some of the changes in the 'Scamper' version:

  • New Music: The original orchestral music was replaced. A new, more modern soundtrack was added. This included new songs for different scenes.
  • Character Name Changes: Almost all the characters got new names!
    • Lolo became Scamper.
    • Pépé became Snowflake.
    • Mak became Louie.
    • Lolo's parents, Toto and Lala, became Gilbert and Gracie.
    • Grandfather Pigo became Mr. Feather.
    • Nini became Rosie.
    • Don became Cowboy.
    • Only Jack, the dog, kept his original name.
  • Scene Edits: Many scenes were changed or removed. This was done to make the story less intense. For example, some scenes showing danger or sadness were cut.
  • Story Changes: Some parts of the story were changed. This made the reasons for certain events different from the original. For instance, the reason Lolo became a leader was changed.

These changes made the 'Scamper' version feel a bit different from the original.

Other Language Versions

Besides English, the movie was also dubbed into other languages. Some of these versions used the original film as a base. Others used the 'Scamper' version.

French Version

A French version was released in cinemas in 2005. It was similar to the German dub. This version brought back some of the original music and scenes that were cut from 'Scamper'. It also added some new music.

German Version

The German version was called Bauzi - Der Kleine Pinguin. It was based on the 'Scamper' version. It had the new theme song and music. However, it restored some scenes that were cut from 'Scamper'. For example, a scene where Lolo's father spanks him was put back. Also, some scenes with animals in danger were restored. Interestingly, in this version, Lolo is called a Humboldt Penguin, even though he is an Adélie Penguin.

Dutch Version

The Dutch version is known as De Avonturen van Pim de Pinguïn. It mixed elements from both the 'Scamper' and original versions. It had a completely different theme song and soundtrack. This version is also known for having many cartoon-like sound effects. It is the only version of the movie released in a widescreen format.
