The Brothers are three small islands located at the mouth of the Kennebecasis River. This river is in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. The islands are just north of a place called Millidgeville. They are also known as The Brothers Islands Indian Reserve #18. The islands were given back to the Wolastoqiyik people in the 1830s. The Wolastoqiyik are a First Nation group. Today, these islands are part of the city of Saint John.
History of The Brothers Islands
The Brothers Islands Indian Reserve #18 was a special area for the Wolastoqiyik First Nation. It is located on a group of small islands in the mouth of the Kennebecasis River. These islands are in Saint John County, New Brunswick.
The reserve was first returned to the Wolastoqiyik people on September 19, 1838. It quickly became a busy place where Wolastoqey families lived. They cleared land to grow crops and built homes. They also used the islands' natural resources.
Today, the reserve has two islands and covers about 10 acres. However, a report from 1842 mentioned that "The Brothers" reserve had three islands. That report said the total area was 15 acres.
