The Croods: A New Age is an exciting animated adventure comedy film from 2020. It was made by DreamWorks Animation and released by Universal Pictures. This movie is a sequel, meaning it continues the story from The Croods, which came out in 2013.
Joel Crawford directed this film. It was his first time directing a full-length movie. The story was created by Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders, who directed the first film. Many famous actors lent their voices to the characters. These include Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds. They returned from the first movie. New voices like Peter Dinklage, Leslie Mann, and Kelly Marie Tran also joined the cast.
A sequel to The Croods was planned way back in 2013. However, the project was stopped in 2016. This happened because Universal took over DreamWorks. Luckily, the movie was brought back to life in 2017. Joel Crawford then took over as director. A lot of the animation work had to be done from home. Plot Summary
The movie starts with a sad flashback. We see Guy as a young boy. His parents are trapped in tar. They tell him to find a place called 'tomorrow'. Guy then goes on a long journey. He meets a small sloth named Belt and they become friends.
The Croods family, along with Guy, are still looking for a safe home. They have their pets, Chunky and Douglas, with them. They face many dangerous creatures along the way. Grug, the dad, gets annoyed by Eep and Guy's growing romance. One day, Grug finds a giant wall. He leads everyone to it. They get caught in a net.
The people who live there are the Bettermans. Phil and Hope Betterman free them. It turns out they were friends with Guy's parents. The Bettermans invite the Croods to their amazing tree-home. They meet Dawn, Phil and Hope's daughter. Dawn is also Guy's old friend. Eep and Dawn quickly become best friends.
Life with the Bettermans is tough for Grug. The Bettermans are very advanced and act like they are better. They think Guy should leave the Croods. Phil takes Grug to his secret man-cave. It's a sauna behind waterfalls. Phil tricks Grug into thinking Guy should leave their group. In return, Eep would stay with the Croods. Meanwhile, Hope tries to trick Ugga, Grug's wife. But Ugga gets angry and decides they should leave.
Later, Eep learns Dawn has never left the wall. Eep understands how Dawn feels, like she was stuck in her cave. Eep convinces Dawn to sneak out. They use Chunky to escape the wall. They go for a fun ride. But a bee stings Dawn, and her hand swells up. When Eep brings her back, Guy gets upset. He calls Eep a 'cave-girl' without thinking.
At dinner, everyone is tense. Dawn's swollen hand is noticed. Grug accidentally spills the beans about his deal with Phil. The Croods decide to leave the next morning. But Guy decides to stay with the Bettermans. Soon, "Punch Monkeys" attack the land. These monkeys are strong and angry. Grug and Ugga had eaten their bananas. Phil explains he sends bananas to the monkeys every day. This keeps them from bothering the Bettermans. Since the bananas are gone, the monkeys kidnap Grug, Phil, and Guy. They take them to their home.
The women of the families go to rescue the men. They get stuck on an island full of Wolf-Spiders. These are wolves with spider-like traits. Hope Betterman gets very upset. She yells at the Croods and runs off. But she has a scary encounter with the Wolf-Spiders. She realizes she was wrong and accepts the Croods. They learn where the men are. They name themselves "The Thunder Sisters." This is after a female group Gran was in when she was young.
At the Punch Monkey home, the men learn the truth. Phil had changed a river's path for his farm. This took away the monkeys' water. The monkeys need bananas to offer to a giant monster. This monster is called the Spiny Mandrilla. The Punch Monkeys make Grug and Phil fight. They want to see who will be sacrificed. They get tired and talk about their feelings. Guy realizes he was wrong about Eep.
The Punch Monkeys dress the three men as bananas. They plan to sacrifice them to the Spiny Mandrilla. Grug and Phil apologize to each other. They also apologize for pressuring Guy. Just as the monster is about to eat them, the Thunder Sisters arrive! A big battle begins. Guy and Eep end up on a giant skull-chandelier. They make up and use it to defeat the Spiny Mandrilla. They use fire to cut the ropes. The skull falls into a deep hole. The monster tries to climb out. It grabs Eep's "peanut toe." This is a fake toe she uses. It pulls off, and the monster falls to its end. The families escape safely.
Finally, the families get along. The Bettermans let the Croods live nearby. Guy realizes Eep is his 'tomorrow'. He and Eep move into one of the Bettermans' bedrooms. Grug is happy about this. The Punch Monkeys even become their new neighbors!
