What's the Story?
The Croods are a family of cavepeople who live in a dangerous world. Their dad, Grug, is very strict. He keeps everyone safe by making them stay inside their cave most of the time. They only leave for short trips to find food.
His teenage daughter, Eep, loves her family. But she also wants to explore the world outside. One night, Eep sees a strange light and sneaks out. She meets a clever boy named Guy and his pet sloth named Belt. Guy has made a torch with fire, which is new to Eep. He warns her that the world is about to end and offers to help her escape. But Eep decides to stay with her family. Guy gives her a shell horn to call him if she needs help. When Eep gets back, her family is scared of the "New" and breaks the horn.
Soon, a huge earthquake destroys their cave. The Croods have to run into a new, wild jungle. They meet a big, colorful cat-like creature called a "Macawnivore." Eep's grandmother calls him "Chunky." The family runs from Chunky, but then he gets scared away by flying "piranhakeets" that eat a ground whale. Eep makes another horn and calls Guy. He saves them with his fire!
The Croods are very confused by fire at first. Grug even traps Guy in a log so he can guide them to safety. Guy suggests they go to a mountain with caves. As they travel, Guy earns their trust and is let out of the log. Grug tries to steal a bird's egg, but Guy teaches Eep how to set a trap for the bird instead.
Guy helps the Croods in many ways. He invents simple shoes for them and shares other "ideas." He tells them about "Tomorrow," a place of light where being curious is a good thing. Grug gets jealous of Guy, especially when he sees Eep and Guy falling in love. Grug tries to fight against change and invent things himself, but it doesn't go well. This makes his family feel distant from him. His wife, Ugga, has a serious talk with him.
The family finds a new cave, but only Grug wants to go inside. The others have learned to like living outside. Grug gets angry and attacks Guy. They both fall into a sticky tar flow. Guy tells Grug that he lost his own family in a tar flow. Grug feels bad and decides they must work together to escape. They trick Chunky into pulling them out.
Then, a huge volcano starts erupting! Guy and the Croods run until they reach a giant crack in the ground. The land is breaking apart. Grug feels the sun's warmth through the smoke. He realizes there might be good land on the other side. Grug throws his family one by one across the chasm, knowing he will be left behind. He shares his newest invention, a "hug," with Eep before throwing her over. They land safely on the other side. Grug is left alone in a cave.
Grug meets Chunky, who is scared of the dark. Chunky stays with Grug instead of attacking him. Grug hears Eep blowing her horn, missing him. He realizes they are calling for his help. Grug gets his biggest new idea! He uses tar, fire, a whale ribcage, and the piranhakeets to build a makeshift airship. He, Chunky, and other animals fly over the chasm.
Grug is welcomed back as the loving leader of the family. Eep gives him a hug back. With Guy and their new pets, the Croods start a new life. They live on a tropical mountainside that leads to the ocean. They can follow the sun every day and enjoy all the new inventions that Guy and Grug come up with!
