Koindrim / The Doughboys are two small islands located near Cape Grim. This cape is the most northwestern point of Tasmania, Australia. The islands are part of a group called the Trefoil Island Group.
The western island is about 5.4 hectares in size. The eastern island is a bit larger, covering about 7 hectares. Together, these islands are an important part of Tasmania's natural environment.
Naming the Islands
In June 2021, the Tasmanian government worked with local Aboriginal groups. They decided to give the island pair a dual name: Koindrim. This means that on maps and in books, you will see them called Koindrim / The Doughboys.
Before this, in March 2021, the two individual islands also received new names. The eastern island is now called Kaninerwidic (pronounced Ka-nina-widic). The western island is known as Karrernootong (pronounced Kara-nu-tong). These names honor the rich history and culture of the Aboriginal people.
Amazing Wildlife
The islands are a special place for birds. They are part of the Hunter Island Group Important Bird Area. This area is recognized for being very important for many types of birds.
Many different seabird and shorebird species come here to breed. Some of these include:
- short-tailed shearwater
- fairy prion
- common diving-petrel
- Pacific gull
- silver gull
- sooty oystercatcher
- pied oystercatcher
Besides birds, you can also find some reptiles on the islands. One example is the metallic skink, a type of lizard. These islands provide a safe home for all these creatures.
