The Frick Pittsburgh is a group of museums and historic buildings in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is built around "Clayton," the home of the Frick family from the 1800s. This special place helps visitors learn about Henry Clay Frick, a famous businessman and art collector.
The Frick Pittsburgh covers about 5.5 acres of gardens in the Point Breeze neighborhood. It includes Clayton, the Frick family's restored mansion, The Frick Art Museum, The Car and Carriage Museum, a Greenhouse, a children's playhouse, and The Café. More than 100,000 people visit each year. You can explore the gardens, the main art collection, and parts of the Car and Carriage Museum for free. There are fees for special art exhibits and tours of Clayton. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in May 2025.
Helen Clay Frick, Henry Clay Frick's daughter, worked hard to save the Frick estate. She wanted it to be open to everyone after she passed away.
The Frick's Story
The museum started with an eleven-room house that the Frick family bought in 1881. This house, built in the 1860s, was later called "Clayton." It was updated by architects like Andrew Peebles and Frederick J. Osterling. A playhouse was also built in 1897.
Clayton was the Fricks' main home from 1883 to 1905. After that, they moved to New York City. There, they created the Frick Collection, another famous museum. Helen Clay Frick returned to Clayton in 1981 and lived there until she passed away in 1984.
Clayton opened to the public in 1990. In 1997, the old carriage house was made bigger to create The Car and Carriage Museum. In 2013, the Frick Pittsburgh began a big renovation project. This work finished in 2015. The Car and Carriage Museum became twice as large, and new community and education centers were built.
Amazing Collections
The Frick Art Museum has many interesting artworks. You can see drawings by Jean-François Millet and old European paintings from the 1800s. There are also beautiful bronze sculptures from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
The museum also displays older paintings with religious themes. These include works by artists like Bernardo Daddi and Sassetta. Other paintings show everyday life or stories, such as "Scenes from Homer's Odyssey" by Apollonio Di Giovanni. You can also find art by famous painters like Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Steen. Inside the Clayton mansion, you can see 19th-century paintings by artists like Jules Cazin.
Cool Cars and Carriages
The Car and Carriage Museum is home to many unique vehicles. You can see an 1881 Brougham, which is a type of old car. There's also a 1903 Baker Electric car and a 1909 Bailey Electric Phaeton.
Other interesting cars include a 1914 Ford Model T Touring Car and a fancy 1914 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Touring Car. You can also spot a small 1924 Auto Red Bug Flyer and a 1940 American Bantam Convertible Coupe. It's a great place to see how cars have changed over time!
