The Good Witch of the West (also known as Nishi no Yoki Majo (西の善き魔女)) is a popular fantasy story. It started as a series of novels written by Noriko Ogiwara. Later, it was turned into a manga series and an anime TV show. The anime is called Astraea Testament.
The story is about a fifteen-year-old girl named Firiel Dee. She thinks she's just an ordinary person. But then she finds out a big secret: she's actually a princess! This discovery changes her life completely. The books and manga were released in English in North America by Tokyopop.

What is the Story About?
Firiel Dee gets a special necklace from her childhood friend, Roux. This necklace was a birthday gift from her dad, Gideon Dee. Gideon is an astrologer, someone who studies stars.
When Firiel turns fifteen, she goes to a big party at the royal Roland castle. It's for the Queen's Birthday. She decides to wear her new necklace to the party. But the necklace is not just any jewelry! It's a missing treasure of the royal family. Because of this necklace, everyone learns that Firiel is actually a princess. This means she could become the next Queen!
Who are the Main Characters?
Firiel Dee: The Main Character
Firiel Dee (フィリエル·ディー, Firieru Dii) is the main hero of the story. She was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Holy because her father, Gideon, was always busy with his studies. Firiel becomes one of the girls who could become the next Queen. She also learns that her mother was a famous member of the royal family.
Roux Liskin: Firiel's Friend
Roux Liskin (ルー·ルツキン, Rū Rutsukin) is Firiel's childhood friend. He is also a student and helper to Firiel's father. Roux always protects Firiel. He clearly likes her a lot. At first, Firiel sees him more like a little brother. But later, their relationship becomes more serious. Roux has a difficult past. He feels he cannot be with Firiel because she is so bright and good. In the anime, they end up together.
Adel Roland: The Princess Author
Adel Roland (アデイル·ロウランド, Adeiru Rōrando) is a princess and another girl who could become Queen. She becomes one of Firiel's good friends. Adel is a writer who creates fantasy stories.
Leandra Cheviat: The Rival
Leandra Cheviat is also a princess and a candidate for Queen. She is the headmistress of a girls' school. She wants to keep her high status. Leandra sees Firiel and Adel as rivals. She tries to trick Roux, but it doesn't work. Even though she seems mean, she is actually very loyal to her country.
Ravenna: The Sword Fighter
Firiel meets Ravenna at the special girls' school. Ravenna is the leader of a group that controls the school. She is Leandra's main helper. Ravenna is one of the best sword fighters at the school.
Ingraine: The Trainer
Ingraine also goes to the same school as Firiel. Her sword fighting skills are almost as good as Ravenna's. She helps train Firiel for a duel against Ravenna. Later, she fights dragons with Eusis. She starts to like him.
Gideon Dee: Firiel's Father
Gideon Dee (ギディオン·ディー, Gidion Dii) is Firiel's father. He is a scientist and researcher. He took Roux in as his student. Firiel sometimes thinks he cares more about Roux than her. It is later found out that he helped Firiel's mother, Duchess Edilin, escape from the palace. They then got married.
The Holy Family: Firiel's Caretakers
Tabitha Holy (タビサ·ホーリー, Tabisa Hōrii) (Mrs. Holy) and Bo Holy (ボゥ·ホーリー, Bō Hōrii) (Mr. Holy) took care of Firiel before she lived in the palace. Mrs. Holy helps Firiel throughout the story. Sadly, Mr. Holy dies trying to save Firiel and Roux.
Marie: The Village Friend
Marie is Firiel's friend from her village. She often calls Firiel "fairy girl." Marie becomes good friends with Adel. They both try to convince Firiel to marry Eusis.
Eusis Roland: The Other Rival
Eusis Roland (ユーシス·ロウランド, Yūshisu Rōrando) is Adel's older brother. He also protects Firiel. Eusis is seen as Roux's rival for Firiel's love. He asks Firiel to marry him many times, but she says no.
Lot Chrisbard: Eusis's Friend
Lot Chrisbard (ロット·クリスバード, Rotto Kurisubādo) is Eusis's close friend. He often teases Eusis about his feelings for Firiel. He is smart and can be tricky.
Bard: The Magical Minstrel
Bard is a mysterious singer with magical powers. He is a close guard to the queen of Gulair.
Edilin: Firiel's Mother
Edilin (エディリーン, Ediriin) is Firiel's mother. She was a duchess and a candidate to be the next queen of Astrea. She disappeared with her special necklace, which Firiel now has. Adel and Eusis recognize the necklace from a picture. Edilin was a smart and rebellious young woman, much like Firiel. She was willing to give up everything for love. After running away, she changed her name to Yuna.
Different Versions of the Story
The Good Witch of the West has been told in a few different ways.
The Novels
There are eight Nishi no Yoki Majo novels. They were released from 1997 to 2003. The last three books are side stories. Noriko Ogiwara wrote them, and Chuokoron-Shinsha published them. Tokyopop released them in English in North America.
The Manga
The manga version of the story was drawn by Haruhiko Momokawa. It was published in Japan by Mag Garden and in the USA by Tokyopop. The manga started in July 2004. There are 7 volumes in total.
The Anime TV Series
An anime TV show based on The Good Witch of the West aired in Japan in 2006. It has thirteen episodes. Hal Film Maker made the anime, and Katsuichi Nakayama directed it. The show was broadcast on several TV channels in Japan.
The anime uses two main songs. The opening song is "Starry Waltz" by Kukui. The ending song is "Kanata" (彼方) by Mariaria. In North America, Section23 Films released the series.

Soundtrack
The music for the anime was created by Masumi Itō. The official soundtrack was released in Japan in July 2006. It has 39 songs from the show.
