The Hangar Flight Museum is a cool place to visit in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It's located just south of the Calgary International Airport. This museum used to be called the Aero Space Museum of Calgary. It's a special place where you can learn all about airplanes and space travel.

History of the Museum

How the Museum Started

The museum began in 1975. It was started by people who loved airplanes. Many of them were pilots who flew during World War II. They wanted to share their passion for flight.

The museum grew from an older private collection. This collection was known as the Air Museum of Canada. In 1985, the museum moved to its current home. This building was once a hangar used for training pilots. It was part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan during World War II.

Changes and Restorations

In 2016, the museum got a big makeover. Workers replaced the roof and installed a new heating and cooling system. That same year, the museum changed its name. It became known as The Hangar Flight Museum.

A special airplane, a Hawker Hurricane, returned in 2019. It had been carefully restored for seven years. Earlier in 2019, the museum also started restoring a CF-100 airplane.

Future Plans

In March 2023, a strong windstorm damaged one of the museum's buildings. This building, called the annex, stores many aircraft. It was the second time weather had damaged this building. The museum is now raising money to build a brand new museum building.

Exciting Exhibits

The museum has exhibits about Canadian space programs. You can learn about astronauts and rockets. It also has an archives. This is a collection of old documents about flying and airplanes.

Remembering Heroes

There is a special War memorial at the museum. It has a large stone slab and four smaller ones. These were put up by the Aircrew Association and the museum. They honor the air forces that trained in Calgary during World War II.

These forces included the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) from Canada. Also honored are the Royal Air Force (RAF) from Britain. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) are also remembered. In front of the stones, there is a gravel picture of a Canadian roundel. This is a symbol used on Canadian aircraft.

The museum also has a list of honor memorial. It remembers all the brave airmen from Alberta. These airmen lost their lives during World War II.

The museum works with other important groups. These include the CMA and the CHIN. It is also connected to the Virtual Museum of Canada.
