This special story is based on Orlev's own experiences during World War II. The book tells the exciting and sometimes scary journey of a young boy named Alex. He has to survive all by himself in a difficult place called a ghetto.
This book is very famous! Uri Orlev even won a big award called the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1996, mostly because of this story. The Island on Bird Street has been translated into many languages. It was also turned into a play and a movie.
What's the Story About?
The main character is Alex, an 11-year-old Jewish boy. He lives in a ghetto in German-occupied Poland during World War II. Alex lives with his father and their friend, Boruch.
One day, German soldiers come into the ghetto. They send many people onto trains to be taken away. Alex and his father get separated during this time. Soon, Alex finds himself alone in the empty ghetto.
Alex has to learn how to survive by himself. He discovers that the ghetto is not completely empty. He meets different people, some of whom try to help him. He finds a safe place in an abandoned, bombed-out building on Bird Street.
To pass the time, Alex has a pet mouse named Snow. He also reads the book Robinson Crusoe and other stories. A small window in his hiding spot lets him look out over the town. Alex must find his own food and stay hidden from the soldiers. It's a big challenge for him to get through these tough times. He also waits for his father to return.
The Movie Version
