The Story of the Brave Journey
The movie begins with Littlefoot, a young Apatosaurus (a long-necked dinosaur). He lives in the beautiful Great Valley. Littlefoot is excited because his father, Bron, visits the valley once a year with his herd.
However, a Nothronychus (a type of plant-eating dinosaur) from Bron's group, named Wild Arms, brings bad news. He tells Littlefoot that Bron got stuck in the wilderness. This happened when a "fire mountain" (a volcano) erupted. The rest of Bron's herd had to leave him behind.
Littlefoot asks Wild Arms for help, but he refuses. The other grown-up dinosaurs also say no to going after Bron. Worried about his dad, Littlefoot decides to go alone. But his friends quickly catch up to him.
Facing Challenges on the Way
At first, the friends do well on their journey. But soon, they reach a big "earth divide" (a deep canyon). Someone suggests they take the "Long Valley" route, but Littlefoot thinks it will take too long. He insists they must cross the divide. Luckily, they manage to knock down a tree to make a bridge and get across.
Later, they have two close calls with two Yutyrannus (large, feathered meat-eating dinosaurs). As night falls, the children go to sleep. Meanwhile, the older dinosaurs learn about the children's adventure. They decide to go after them, bringing along Chomper and Ruby.
The adults try to get Wild Arms to guide them back to where Bron was last seen. But Wild Arms faints when he sees Chomper, who is a "sharptooth" (a meat-eater). Chomper then has to lead the way using his strong sense of smell.
Separated and Reunited
The next morning, Littlefoot and Cera disagree on which path to take. Littlefoot decides to go ahead alone. A big sand cloud (a sandstorm) then happens. Littlefoot gets trapped in a cave. Inside, he meets a Pteranodon (a flying reptile) named Etta. She knows his father, Bron.
Meanwhile, Cera, Ducky, and Spike lose Petrie. Petrie finds a group of "diggers" (small, burrowing dinosaurs). His friends soon find him, and they leave the diggers, who then choose a new leader.
Inside the cave, Etta tells Littlefoot what happened to Bron. She also says that Bron got into trouble because he rescued Wild Arms. Etta sings a song to encourage Littlefoot as they try to find a way out of the cave.
The other kids run into a dangerous Carnotaurus (a large, horned meat-eating dinosaur). Etta helps them escape by making a hole in the cave ceiling. Etta eventually leads Littlefoot and his friends out of the cave. They reach the fire mountain where they find Bron.
Saving Bron and Learning Together
Bron is surrounded by lava, and it looks hopeless. He tells the children to leave so they don't get hurt, but Littlefoot refuses to give up.
Later, the grown-ups, Chomper, and Ruby find the Carnotaurus. Chomper smells it, and they hide. Wild Arms almost gives them away by making noise because he is scared. But a flock of Archaeornithomimus (ostrich-like dinosaurs) distracts the sharptooth.
Back at the fire mountain, Etta and the kids work together to save Bron. They pour water onto the "Flowing Fire" (lava) to stop it. They use a tree to free Bron. However, the lava returns, trapping Littlefoot and his father on the other side. Bron quickly scoops up Littlefoot and jumps across the lava.
Right after, the adults, Chomper, and Ruby find them. Everyone is reunited with Bron. The group celebrates working together and finding bravery through friendship.
