The Man Called Flintstone is a fun animated spy comedy film from 1966. It was made by Hanna-Barbera Productions and released by Columbia Pictures. This movie is a spin-off from the popular TV show The Flintstones. It was the second film Hanna-Barbera ever made, after Hey There, It's Yogi Bear! in 1964.
The film was directed by the creators of the TV show, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. It came out on August 3, 1966, right after the TV series finished. The movie is a funny take on the famous James Bond spy films. It even had a working title, That Man Flintstone, which was a nod to another spy movie called Our Man Flint.
This movie was special for a few reasons. It was the first time Gerry Johnson voiced Betty Rubble in a feature film. Also, Henry Corden provided Fred Flintstone's singing voice. He later took over the full role of Fred after Alan Reed passed away in 1977. The film has many songs, including one by Louis Prima, but it doesn't use the original Flintstones TV show theme song.
What's the Story?
The movie begins with a secret agent named Rock Slag. He looks exactly like Fred Flintstone! Rock Slag is being chased in Bedrock by two bad guys, Ali and Bobo. They think they've gotten rid of him after pushing him off a building.
Meanwhile, the Flintstones and Rubbles are getting ready for a camping trip. They try to drop off their pets, Dino and Hoppy, at the vet. On the way back, Fred crashes Barney's car. They have to stop at the hospital, which is where Rock Slag is also recovering.
Ali and Bobo find Rock Slag at the hospital and hurt him again. The Chief of the Secret Service, Chief Boulder, has an idea. He asks Fred to pretend to be Rock Slag in Paris for a very important meeting. Fred's mission is to meet Tanya, a top agent working for a master criminal called the Green Goose. Tanya wants to help catch the Green Goose, but only if she can meet the "irresistible" Rock Slag. Rock Slag isn't sure about this plan, but Chief Boulder promises to watch over Fred.
Fred thinks the "Green Goose" is an actual bird! He tells his family their camping trip is now a free trip to "Eurock" (Europe). Fred and Barney return all their camping gear. They use the money to buy tickets for the Rubbles to come along. While they travel, Ali and Bobo keep trying to hurt Fred, thinking he is Rock Slag.
Once in Paris, Chief Boulder tells Fred he needs to go to Rome instead. A master of disguise named Triple X will help him. Fred tries to sneak away from Wilma to meet Tanya. But he ends up spending the night trying to escape all of Rock Slag's female fans! After missing a date with Wilma, Fred buys her a "fake diamond necklace" from a street seller. He wants to make up for it, but Wilma slept so soundly she didn't even notice he was gone!
Fred finds the Chief's secret office and tries to quit his mission. But then he learns what the Green Goose really is. He feels guilty about Pebbles' future and decides to continue. He makes an excuse to meet Tanya at a restaurant. Unfortunately, Wilma and the Rubbles go to the same restaurant and see them together!
Rock Slag actually shows up to replace Fred, but an angry Wilma, Betty, and Barney mistakenly hit him. He's out of action again! Tanya then leads Fred to the Green Goose's hideout, which is an old amusement park. Fred doesn't know that Ali and Bobo have captured Chief Boulder, so he has no backup. Barney, who followed Fred to see what was going on, also gets captured by the Green Goose.
The Green Goose tries to get secret information from Fred, still thinking he is Rock Slag. He tortures Barney to make Fred talk. But Fred refuses to say anything, even though Barney is in pain.
The Green Goose turns out to be Triple X! He plans to launch a deadly missile disguised as the park's space ride. Fred and Barney accidentally lock themselves inside the missile. The Green Goose then overhears that Fred has an "expensive" necklace. He offers to release them if Fred gives him the necklace. When he opens the door, Fred and Barney trick Triple X! They lock him, Ali, Bobo, and Tanya inside the missile. The target is reset for outer space, sending them all on an unknown journey!
A big welcome home party is held in Bedrock for Fred, who is now a hero. But he's just happy to be back home with his family (after the restaurant mix-up is cleared up). They go on a secret getaway. But then, Roberta, one of Rock Slag's fans Fred met in Rome, and her brother Mario secretly move to Bedrock. They chase Fred all over town, which confuses Wilma, Barney, and Betty!
