The Mighty Kong is an animated musical movie from 1998. It tells the classic story of King Kong, a giant ape. This film was released straight to video, meaning it didn't play in movie theaters first. Famous voice actors like Jodi Benson and Dudley Moore (in his last role before he passed away in 2002) lent their voices to the characters.
The movie was animated in South Korea and Hong Kong. It features original songs by the famous Sherman Brothers, who also wrote music for many Disney movies. The Mighty Kong was first released on VHS tapes in 1998. Later, it became available on DVD in 2019. You can also find it on streaming platforms like Tubi and Vimeo.
Story of the Mighty Kong
The movie begins with Ann Darrow, an actress who needs a job. She meets Carl Denham, a film director, who offers her a role in his new movie. They board a ship called the Venture to travel to a mysterious island for filming. A mischievous monkey on the ship causes some funny trouble during their journey.
When they arrive at the island, they have a scary encounter with the local people. Ann is then taken by a huge ape named King Kong. Kong carries her deep into the jungle. While in the jungle, Ann and Kong face off against dangerous creatures. They fight a giant meat-eating dinosaur called a Tyrannosaurus, a flying reptile known as a Pterodactylus, and a massive snake called a Gigantophis.
Later in the film, Kong is brought to New York City. He causes a lot of chaos and excitement in the city. Kong takes Ann to the very top of the Empire State Building. Airplanes try to attack Kong with guns, but they often miss. After the planes are dealt with, the army tries a new plan. They use two large airships with a net between them to catch Kong.
They manage to catch him in the net. Kong struggles to get free, and the net rips. As Kong reaches for Ann, he falls from the building. He hits a balcony on the way down and then crashes onto the streets of New York. The movie shows Kong crying as he falls. His "mightiness" seems to end when he lands, becoming unconscious for a while.
