History of the New Daisy Theatre
In 1942, the New Daisy Theatre opened at 330 Beale Street. It was started by Paul and Sam Zerilla, along with their partner Joe Maceri. They already owned the original Daisy Theatre. They wanted a larger space for popular performers.
Early Years as a Movie Theater
For its first few decades, the New Daisy Theatre mostly showed movies. But sometimes, it would also host live music shows.
By the 1970s, the building was in poor condition. Many buildings nearby were torn down, but both the Old Daisy and New Daisy theatres remained standing.
Boxing and Rock Concerts
In the early 1980s, a boxing promoter named Mike Glenn began to rent the New Daisy. He started holding boxing matches there. This helped the theater financially at first.
Later, Glenn began to host rock music concerts. These shows brought in more money than the boxing matches. However, boxing events still continued at the venue. Glenn sold the New Daisy in November 2014. John Hiatt was the last national artist to perform under his management.
Renovations and Reopening
In 2014, Steve Adelman and J.W. Gibson bought the New Daisy Theatre. In 2015, they spent $500,000 to make big improvements. The renovations added a new floor and special VIP areas. They also put in new bars and updated the sound and lighting systems.
After the renovations, many new acts performed there. These included Seether, Drive-By Truckers, and Public Image Ltd..
In 2019, there was a disagreement about money between Adelman and former owner Mike Glenn. The police later dropped the charges. Adelman said he planned to take legal action against Glenn.
The New Daisy Theatre reopened in 2023. Jon Shivers, working with the Downtown Memphis Commission, helped make this happen. The theater now hosts local and national touring acts again. It is also used for company and private events.
