The Price is Right (Australian game show) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Price is Right was a fun Australian television game show. It was on TV in different ways from 1981 to 2012. The show was based on a very popular American game show with the same name.

How the Game Works

Just like the American show, The Price is Right in Australia was all about guessing prices. Players used their shopping skills to guess the correct price of different items. Some items were everyday things like toothpaste. Others were big prizes like trips and cars!

The Australian version had a few special parts:

  • Showcase Playoff: The two people who won the "Showcase Showdown" played this game. They tried to guess the exact price of the big "Showcase" prize. First, they saw all the prizes in the Showcase. Then, they were given a price range of $100. For example, if the Showcase was $35,591, they might get a range of $35,500 to $35,600. The two players took turns guessing the price. The host would tell them if their guess was higher or lower than the real price. The first person to guess the exact price won!
  • Ordering the Prizes: The winner of the Showcase Playoff moved on to the main Showcase. Here, they had to put the prizes in order from the cheapest to the most expensive. If they got the order right, they won all the amazing prizes in the Showcase!

Sometimes, after 2004, the Showcase was called the "Mega Showcase." These showcases were worth a lot, usually between $500,000 and $600,000. Before the price of the last prize was shown, the player could choose to quit and take a cash prize instead. This cash prize could be anywhere from $1,000 to $50,000. On March 3, 2005, someone won a huge $664,667 showcase! At that time, it was the biggest win ever in The Price is Right franchise around the world.
