Website The Shops at Ithaca Mall

The Shops at Ithaca Mall is a big shopping center in Lansing, New York. It's located just north of the city of Ithaca. You can find it where NYS Route 13 and North Triphammer Road meet. This mall has many popular national stores and a food court. It serves shoppers from Tompkins County and Cortland County.

The mall's main stores, called anchor stores, include Target, Regal Cinemas, Best Buy, Ulta Beauty, Dick's Sporting Goods, Old Navy, and Michaels. There are also two empty spots where big stores used to be, like Ultimate Athletics and The Bon-Ton.

Mall History and Changes

The Shops at Ithaca Mall first opened its doors in 1976. It was built by a company called The Pyramid Companies. When it was first built, some people in the community had concerns about its development. The mall was originally known as Pyramid Mall Ithaca. However, in 2007, it got a new name, The Shops at Ithaca Mall, under new management.

Over the years, the mall has changed a lot. All four of its original anchor stores have been replaced. These first stores were JW Rhodes, JCPenney, Montgomery Ward, and Hills (which later became Ames).

  • In 2002, the JCPenney store closed. Its space was then divided into three new stores: Best Buy, Borders Books & Music, and Dick's Sporting Goods.
  • The original Hills/Ames store space became a Regal Cinemas movie theater in 2007. This was also around the time the mall changed its name.
  • When Borders Books & Music closed down in 2011, that space became a store called Ultimate Athletics.

There's also a special place inside the mall for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). It's an annex where you can adopt animals. This SPCA annex has a "Kid's Corner" with books and stuffed animals. You can even meet adoptable cats and kittens there! They also offer a free Pre-School Story Hour and Craft time for the public.

Anchor Store Updates

Big changes continued for the mall's anchor stores.

  • In 2014, a Sears store that was next to the mall closed. Ultimate Athletics then moved into that larger Sears location.
  • On April 17, 2018, the department store Bon-Ton announced it was closing for good. They had big sales for about 10 to 12 weeks, and the store officially closed on August 31, 2018.

Fun Events at the Mall

The Shops at Ithaca Mall often hosts many different events throughout the year. These events are a great way for people to visit the mall and have fun.

Some past events have included:

  • A competition similar to the American Idol TV show.
  • A bridal show for people planning weddings.
  • Two actual weddings, held in partnership with Cayuga Radio Group.
  • A health and wellness fair, offering information and activities about staying healthy.
  • A special pet day, where people could bring their pets.

Local community groups also use the mall to hold fundraising events. For example, organizations like Habitat for Humanity have raised money there to help build homes.
