The Ugly Dachshund is a funny comedy film from 1966 made by Walt Disney Productions. It was directed by Norman Tokar and stars Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette. The movie tells the story of a big Great Dane puppy who thinks he's a tiny dachshund! This film was inspired by a book written by Gladys Bronwyn Stern in 1938. It's one of many cheerful and fun movies Disney made in the 1960s.
What's the Story About?
The movie begins with Fran (Suzanne Pleshette) and Mark Garrison (Dean Jones), a happy couple who own a champion dachshund named Danke. One day, they rush to the hospital because Danke is about to have puppies! On the way, a police officer, Officer Carmody, tries to stop them for speeding. When he realizes they're rushing to the "hospital," he helps them get there quickly.
Officer Carmody thinks Fran is having a baby. But when he catches up to Mark at the vet, he finds out it's Danke who's in labor! Officer Carmody then gives Mark a lot of tickets for speeding.
Danke gives birth to three cute girl puppies: Wilhelmina, Heidi, and Chloe. The veterinarian, Dr. Pruitt (Charlie Ruggles), also has a Great Dane named Duchess who just had puppies. Duchess pushed away one of her boy puppies because she didn't have enough milk for him.
Dr. Pruitt convinces Mark to take the Great Dane puppy home. He explains that Danke has too much milk, and she could help save the little Great Dane's life. Mark brings the puppy home, and Fran is surprised but happy to have another puppy. She thinks it's one of Danke's puppies and is glad Mark finally has a boy dog.
Mark eventually tells Fran the truth about the new puppy. They name him Brutus. Brutus grows up with Danke's dachshund puppies. He believes he is a dachshund too! He even learns to walk by hunching close to the ground, just like his small "brothers" and "sisters."
The dachshunds are very playful and often get into trouble. They lead Brutus into many funny adventures. Officer Carmody, who is now Sergeant Carmody, gets chased up a tree by the dogs. Mark's art studio gets covered in paint, and a garden party turns into a big mess, all thanks to the mischievous dogs and Brutus.
Fran gets tired of Brutus's antics and wants Mark to find him a new home. But then, something amazing happens! Brutus saves Chloe, Fran's favorite dachshund puppy, from a garbage truck. After this, Fran changes her mind and decides Brutus can stay.
Later, Mark and Fran enter their dogs in a dog show. Brutus finally meets other Great Danes. He sees a beautiful female Great Dane and stands tall and proud. Brutus goes on to win two blue ribbons at the show! He finally understands what it means to be a Great Dane. And, he even earns the respect of the little dachshunds.
