Charles Sherman Ruggles (born February 8, 1886 – died December 23, 1970) was a funny American actor. He was known for playing many different characters. Charlie Ruggles acted in almost 100 movies over 60 years. He often played kind and funny roles. His older brother, Wesley Ruggles, was also a director and actor.

Charlie Ruggles: A Life in Acting

Early Life and Stage Work

Charlie Ruggles was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1886. He first planned to become a doctor. However, he soon found himself acting on stage. His first play was Nathan Hale in 1905. In 1912, he worked with a group of actors in San Francisco. He performed in a play called The Dawn of a Tomorrow.

In 1913, Charlie acted in a musical. It was called The Tik-Tok Man of Oz. This play was based on a book by L. Frank Baum. He played a character named Private Jo Files.

Moving to Movies

Charlie Ruggles moved to Broadway in New York City in 1914. He appeared in a play called Help Wanted. His first movie role came in 1915. It was a silent film called Peer Gynt.

Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, Charlie kept acting in silent movies. But he still loved the stage the most. He was in many popular plays. These included The Passing Show of 1918 and Queen High.

In 1929, Charlie started acting in "talking pictures." His first talking movie was Gentleman of the Press. He played a funny newspaper reporter. In the 1930s, he often worked with actress Mary Boland. They made many funny movies together. Some of these were If I Had a Million and Ruggles of Red Gap. Today, many people remember him from the movie Bringing Up Baby. He played a big-game hunter in that film. He was also in It Happened on Fifth Avenue.

TV and Later Roles

In 1944, Charlie Ruggles had his own radio show. It was called The Charlie Ruggles Show. In 1949, he took a break from movies. He went back to the stage and started working in television. He starred in a TV series called The Ruggles (1949–1952). He played a character named Charlie Ruggles. He also starred in The World of Mr. Sweeney. This show ran for 345 episodes!

Charlie returned to the big screen in 1961. He played Charles McKendrick in The Parent Trap. He also acted in The Pleasure of His Company. For this role, he had won a Tony Award in 1959. In 1963, he played the grandfather in Papa's Delicate Condition.

Charlie Ruggles also made guest appearances on many TV shows. These included The Real McCoys and The Beverly Hillbillies. On The Beverly Hillbillies, he played Lowell Redlings Farquhar. He was the father-in-law of Milburn Drysdale. He also appeared on Bewitched and The Andy Griffith Show. Charlie even lent his voice to the Aesop and Son cartoons. These were part of The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. One of his last TV roles was in The Wonder Circus. He played Charlie Wonder, a retired ringmaster.

Personal Life

Charlie Ruggles was married three times. His first marriage was to Adele Rowland from 1914 to 1916. Later, he married Barbara Guillan. They were married until she passed away in 1941. He then married Marion LaBarba in 1942. They stayed together until he passed away in 1970.

Death

Charlie Ruggles died from cancer on December 23, 1970. He was 84 years old. He passed away in Santa Monica, California. He is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. His brother, Wesley Ruggles, is buried nearby.
