Thelma Florence Bate (born Olsen; August 3, 1904 – July 26, 1984) was an important Australian leader. She worked hard for women's rights and helped communities across the country. She was recognized for her efforts with the CBE award.

Thelma Bate: A Leader for Women

Thelma Florence Olsen was born in Sydney, Australia. Her father, Olaf Olsen, was a sailor from Norway. Her mother, Florence Beatrice Olsen, was born in Melbourne. After her father, Olaf, passed away, her mother married Carl Gustav Sundstrom in 1912.

Early Life and Education

Thelma went to Fort Street Girls' High School. She then studied at the University of Sydney. In 1928, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. After finishing her studies, she became a teacher at Meriden School. She also had the chance to travel to other countries.

Starting Her Public Life

On June 20, 1934, Thelma married Richard Falkner Harvey. He was a grazier, which means he raised livestock on a large farm. They settled on his property near Ivanhoe. There, Thelma joined the Country Women's Association (CWA). This group helps women and communities in rural areas.

Her husband passed away in 1946. The next year, Thelma decided to enter politics. She ran as a candidate for the Country Party. She hoped to represent the area of Dubbo in the state election. Thelma Harvey was one of the first women chosen by the Country Party to run in an election in Australia. She also ran in another election in 1953 for the Gwydir area.

Working for the Community

On December 8, 1949, Thelma married Kenneth Kirkby. He was also involved with the Country Party. They lived in Bellata, near Moree. Even though they later separated, Thelma continued to be active in politics. She kept running in elections for the Country Party, but she was not elected.

Thelma was a representative for New South Wales at a big meeting. This was the Associated Country Women of the World conference in Toronto in 1953. She continued to be very involved in community work. She was on a committee for the Freedom from Hunger Campaign. She also represented New South Wales on the United Nations Association of Australia's International Women's Year committee.

Helping Aboriginal Women

On June 12, 1958, Thelma married Jeff Bate. He was a member of the Liberal Party in the Australian House of Representatives. He farmed at Tilba Tilba. They later separated in 1968.

Thelma was a leader in the CWA. She was the honorary secretary from 1957 to 1959. Then, she became president from 1959 to 1962. During her time as president, she strongly supported including Aboriginal women in the CWA. She believed everyone should be welcome. In the 1960s, she was also the treasurer for the Foundation for Aboriginal Affairs. This group worked to help Aboriginal people.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1969, Thelma Bate was given a special award. She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). This award recognized her important contributions to the community. Thelma Florence Bate passed away in 1984 in Gordon. She is remembered for her dedication to women's rights and community leadership.
