Theobald II (born 1263, died May 13, 1312) was an important leader known as the Duke of Lorraine. He ruled from 1303 until his death in 1312. Theobald was the son of Frederick III and Margaret. His mother, Margaret, was the daughter of King Theobald I of Navarre.

Theobald's Early Political Life

In 1298, Theobald II took part in a big battle called the Battle of Göllheim. This battle happened near a city called Speyer. During this fight, the king of Germany, Adolph, was killed while fighting against his rival, Albert of Habsburg. Theobald chose to support Albert in this conflict.

Supporting the French King

In 1302, Theobald and his son, Frederick, supported Philip IV of France. They fought in the Battle of the Golden Spurs near Kortrijk. In this battle, the French knights, led by Robert II of Artois, were defeated by the Flemings.

Theobald was also present at the Battle of Mons-en-Pévèle in 1304. In this battle, the French king himself led his army. After the battle, Theobald, along with John II, Duke of Brabant, and Amadeus V, Count of Savoy, were chosen for an important job. They were sent to negotiate peace with Flanders.

Working with the Pope

In 1305, Theobald was in Lyon for the crowning of Pope Clement V. The Pope decided to collect a special tax from the clergy, which are church officials. He asked Theobald to help collect this tax. Theobald successfully handled the opposition from Renaud de Bar, who was the bishop of Metz.
